Could someone help me, I went out riding today and my speedo is not reading correctly. It's off by as much as 30mph at times. I just had new tires put on it and was wondering if they bumped something or do you guys think it something else. The bike has 9,400 miles on it.

your speedo is probably fouled up.... It happened to me and is a fairly common tt600 problem..... the speedo sensor is located on the left side of the forks in between the tire and the left fork..... it needs to be removed in order to replace the tire therefore it need to be reinstalled properly and carefully.... IMHO i truly believe that my mechanic accidently installed mine wrong and it ended up costing me like 75 bucks to replace from someone on here... you could go back and try and argue that they replace it... good luck

Had exactly the same problem with my speed four, whilst riding along at a constant speed the speedo would jump up and down.

Checked all the usual connectors etc.. but it was actually the speedo drive unit that was faulty.

Good news that the bike is still under warranty, bad news was that triumph were all out of units so had to wait a month for a new one.

Anyway dealer fitted it and it's now as good as new.

Don't know if it's a coincidence but i'd also just changed both tyres as well.

Hope this helps .

This is one of the most talked about problems on the Supersport, Daytona, Speed Triple, and Sprint forums. In some cases it is due to a computer problem or bad connection, but in almost all the cases it is the speedo sensor. The sensor, as stated above, is located on the left side of the wheel of the TT600/S4. It is a unit that has a separately attached magnetic ring with two female notches on the side. Attached to the wheel, separate from the sensor, is a metal ring with corresponding male "ears". When the wheel is put on, the metal ears must align and lock into the female notches of the sensor magnet. Thus, when the wheel moves, the metal plate turns the magnet which then outputs readings which eventually become what you see on the speedometer.

The problem is that the magnets are very delicate and if the ears and notches are not lined up perfectly than the magnet can crack. Also, the magnets sometimes become demagnetized after time or will simply deteriorate on their own. A tell-tale sign of the magnet malfunctioning is erratic readings on the speedo (i.e. what is actually 50 mph reads as 13 mph.)

This issue should be corrected ASAP, although many people comment on how they don't want to spend the money to repair it, so they just ride anyways. The problem with this--I learned the hard way--is that the fragmented magnet will chew up the metal wheel-ring and can even make its way into the wheel bearings. So you go from having to repair just the sensor to having to replace the metal ring and possibly more parts.

The thing that is very frustrating about this issue is that Triumph does not sell the magnetic piece separately from the whole sensor unit--you must buy a whole new sensor. A new sensor costs a whopping $169 USD. You can find them on the TRat classifieds or on Ebay for an average of $45, but they are very scarce and when you do buy one it is sometimes a toss-up as to whether or not that magnet will even work. As for ordering a new one, last time I heard, which was 2 weeks ago, there are no sensors in the USA. The part will come from the UK which will take longer—about 2 to 3 weeks. Hope that helps.

I think that's maybe my reference Bomb Factory? If so, of course that was with regad to the Sprint one that you & I both use on our GSXR fork conversions - can't honestly say whether the same stocking issue applies for the TT600 unit (which is same as the 02-04 S3 & Daytona unit). Note that the designs are the same, just that the TT600/S3/Daytona unit is 20mm ID and left side application vs 25mm ID for the Sprint unit.

Incidentally I got mine from Sprint Manufacturing in the UK to my door in 7 days from date or order - that is quicker than I would have got it from US dealer I suspect! (Price was similar too) - Great vendor

You are correct D'Ecosse, regarding our initial conversation. From there I then spoke with Mt. View Triumph out of curiosity and they informed me that it appears the same is across the board as far as availability goes. But then again, this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been mislead by the dealership! Knock-Knock, wake up Triumph and start selling the magnets separately!

Thanks everyone for the help. I dropped the bike off at the shop where I got my tires put on. They are going to take a look at it tomorrow. I'm hoping that they say they messed something up and will fix it for free, but I don't think that will happen.

Just an update. I the place where I had the tires put on said that the notches weren't lined up properly. The guy bent the tabs a little so they mate better. Rode it home and everything appears to be working well. They also didn't charge me anything.

I would be a little suspicious of the shop where you had the work done. If they admitted that the tabs in fact did not line up, that means that the axle was torqued down while this was the case. That magnet is pretty thin and very delicate, so a fracture could have formed already. It may not be for a few hundred miles, but the magnet could fail.

The other thing is that there is a decent amount of play between the notches and the ears, so the mechanic should not have had to bend the ear(s).

If I were you, I would ask that the shop replace the unit while they are willing to admit their mistake. That would not be cool if you had to fork out $300 for a new sensor and installation.

I agree here my speedo didnt start to error until after about 150 miles after my tire change and then it wasnt for anoth 100 that it failed.... I don't believe in coincidences like that... tire change and shortly thereafter tire mounted speedo failure... c'mon
