ac voltage out from alternator is 30 VOLTS

Dc out of regulator 12 volts

i know 12 volts is low, but is 30 volts normal?

assuming you mean the tt, your alternator should make 27 amps, 30 volts doesn't make sense? It should be putting out I think 12-14 volts. Have you tested your battery? Go to batteries plus and they'll test the battery for free (or most auto parts stores). If thats good go from there.

My buddy has my TT, and hes giving me the info so i dunno.

are you talking 12-14 votls from the regulator, or straight off the stator?

I know its not the battery, beacuse it died and i pulled the one from my Speed Four and put it in there. it seemed fine, but then died again.

from the stator i thought? My understanding is any 12 volt system (car bike boat etc) with an alternator or stator should put out close to 13 or 14 volts

Are you talking about at idle or with some engine speed?

Alright, the Triumph shop manual doesn't say anything about how to test the charging system, so I'll try from memory.
Voltage coming directly from the stator, unplugged the main harness, should be somewhere around 30 volts AC. Yes I said AC.
The regulator is also a rectifier which converts AC into DC, but it also reduces the voltage down to 13.5-14.5 volts.

With everything plugged in and charged up, you should see minimum of 13.5 volts and a max. of 14.5 volts. Regardless of engine rpm.
When you rev the engine you should be able to see the lights get brighter.
Also if regulator is working right you will burn your hand if you touch it (it makes a lot of heat changing from AC to DC).
This is info from older bikes, but the parts do the same thing, only better!

oh i get it now, sorry for the wrong info on my post.

Where exactly would you test the current? There is a connector from the wiring coming out of the stator about 3-4 inches above the stator. So this should read 30 volts ac if I just put my voltmeter against the contacts while still hooked to the bike? Where do you test for the rectifier (I think its under the seat though i don't know exactly what it looks like)

yea we tested with the volt meter on the wire that comes out of the stator and the wire that comes out of the rectifier, the silver metal thing in the tail section

kubbie thanks for the info

looks like rectifier is bad? i dont know, the bike kills a battery pretty quickly.

we are testing at idle
