It has been 3500 miles or so since I had my 6000 mile services done.

Last night I checked my oil level and it was way down at the very bottom of the hash marks. FYI, I did check it in accordance with the manual (standing straight up, Dipstick screwed all the way down) . Im kinda worried that I may have a burning oil problem. Now, I dont know what level it was at directly after the service, as I just take my shops word that it has been done and is ready to ride. So I dont know how much may have been lost since the oil was changed 3500 miles ago. Im assuming that 1.0 Gallons/3.9 liters was used and that would be the top of the hash marks as stated in the manual.

I also have a belly pan and wash my bike regularly, so I would definately notice a leak. However, I also watch the exhaust on startup and I never see any blue smoke, nor does it smell bad, it smells and runs like normal.

Is it typicaly that a bike would "use" oil, and still not have any problems at all. Just normal usage?

One thing that comes to mind is that maybe there is a bit of vapor being burned in the vapor recovery, being it runs so hot this time of year?

What are your thoughts on this. I have heard rumors that the 675 motor "uses" oil as well and is considered somewhat normal?

EDIT: also, I have really been beating the piss out it lately. 14k, WOT for lenghty period at a time, general "hooliganism", all that good stuff. Can that be why I have more consumption that I remember?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Engines can "use" oil, especially if they're worked hard.

If your emissions are normal, there's no blue smoke and no leaks, and you've been 4,000 miles since the last service, I don't think there's any problem.

That said, keep an eye on your levels, say weekly, for the next month or two just to make sure.

I generally give my bike a lookover every 1000 miles or so (once every 1-2 weeks) - check the chain tension, oil, coolant, tightness of all the bolts that hold plastics (lost one from my front fender a few weeks ago!), etc.

My bike uses about 1/2 quart in between oil changes...

as a daily rider I put 1500 miles on it and just recently checked oil levels and noticed im at the lower end of the hash marks... but just barely that high... i dont notice any leaking (my garage floor is dry) and no smoke at all out the after market exhaust... I was razzing it kinda hard this last couple of weeks... but im running spectro gold synthetic 10W40.... I think the manual says to run 10W50 or 15W50... I cant remember and I'm seperated from my bike right now and will be for the week but this is just bothering me and seeing this post i figured why not....

would running 15W50 help with oil burn (I know in cars that burn oil it helps to go thicker)....

also could I just add 10/50 or 15/50 to what little 10/40 I have or should I just replace all oil... I know what should be done the questions isnt should it is could (just to clarify)

If you're on the dipstick at all you have a lot of oil left in there - The hashes are for a bit less then a quart, I think. You can mix oil viscosities and get the average, FWIW...
