I would like to buy some new tires, looking at pirelli, metger, bf goodrich. I want something that will be really sticky, doesn't take too long to heat up. This will be for the street. I would like to get something where I can learn to do better s turns and such on the 2 mile lane in back of my house, that I own. Cost is not really an issue, I just want to have a nice tire that I can use. right now I have the Michelin radial pilot sports on now, 180/55zr17 (73w) for the rear and 120/70zr17 (58w) for the front. Can I go wider in the rear?

Stick with the stock sizing and you'll be happy. If you go wider in the back it will slow down transitions, take more work to hold tight lines, and not put appreciably more rubber on the ground when you're leaned over.
One consideration is how many miles you put on your bike. If your roll a lot of miles sticky sport tires are going to wear out pretty darn fast.
I'm running Conti Road Attacks right now, but they're more of a 'sport touring' tire. That said, I have about 3000 miles on them and the rear is starting to square off pretty badly (I have to do a lot of highway miles).
I've heard really good things about the Pilots you have now. I think my next tire is going to by the Pilot Power 2CT (dual tread compound). You could also check out the Pirelli Diablo's.

You probably don't want to go wider than 180 if handling's what you're after.
Pirelli Diablo Corsas seem to be popular right now, but you might also check out the Michelin Pilot Sport 2CT.

Unless you are doing trackdays, Michelin Sport Pilots, or Pirelli Diablos are fine choices. If you are doing trackdays or pushing hard, Pilot Powers or Diablo Corsas are sticky enough to do just fine. I haven't tried any dual compound tires yet, so I don't know how they compare, but Pilot Powers get used by a number of racers who are a lot faster than I am, so they are probably plenty sticky for nearly all of us.

I also vote for stock size Pirelli Diablo Corsa III 's....great tire. Every now and then they have a special if you buy the rear you get the front for free. I have seen this twice so keep you eye open for it.

It's also time for me to find new rubber. I'm in a bit different category though. I put on a pair of Bridgestone Battlax BT012 SSes last year, rode them about 4500 miles, and now need a new set. I'd like to get 6-8k miles out of the next set. Im not running super hard into corners, dont anticipate any track days this summer, etc, but would like to still be confident when i do decide to be a bit more aggressive on back country roads. Any suggestions?

Alekker -
That's exactly what I was looking for with the Conti's. I'm really dissapointed with how quickly they're wearing... Maybe I just don't lean it over enough...

You bought the whole tire, you might as well use the whole tire.
