I have a 01 TT600 and the key switch is problematic.

All of a sudden, when I put the key in and turn to the right to turn on, nothing happens but when I slowly turn back to the left without having it click back to off, it will go on but when I let go and let it go back all the way to right, it turns off again!

Is this simply a bad switch problem? or could it be a wiring electrical problem?

any thoughts?

prize open the little flap where the key goes in and squirt a load of wd40 in there, if that don't work then you must have a knackered wire in there

Tried that but no luck.

Next step is to take the lockset out and take it apart and look for corrosion on the contacts inside since a new one costs $200 and then you have two different keys for bike.

Anyone ever take one of these off before?

yes i have. there is no electrical contact between the tumbler area and the switch, it's all mechanical. i don't have the switch in front of me, but it sounds like you've got a problem in the switch portion. iirc, you have to remove the whole assembly from the upper triple clamp by removing the 2 security screws - i've used a pair of needle nose vice grips to break them loose and from there, they come out pretty easily. then there are 2 or 4 screws that hold the tumbler to the switch. at some point, i used a dremel cutting wheel to slot the security screws and maybe the other screws as well. i also used a little bit of loc-tite to put everything back together. hth

alright, i pulled the spare broken ignition switch assembly out and looked it over - i even took some pics. the whole assembly mounts to the upper triple clamp from underneath with 2 security screws. these come out easily with vice grips to break them loose. then two more security screws hold the tumbler assembly to the actual switch. from what i remember, once i had the whole thing out of the bike, i took my dremel tool and used a cutting wheel to cut slots in the remaining security screws so that i could easily remove and reinstall them. i also slotted the triple clamp security screws while they were out. putting things back together, i used a little loc-tite on all 4 screws so they wouldn't come out. i have a feeling that the plastic bits in the switch portion of your assembly are broken. i am not certain if you can just order that part. hth - jeff h

Do you know what size torx socket is needed for the two bolts holding it on? E4 or E5?

Chad- The bolts should be shearbolts (tamper bolts). I don't think you can get a torx on there.

yes exactly. the bolts are designed to prevent a thief from stealing your bike and are not designed to ever come off. as stated above, you need to use a pair of needle nose vice grips to remove the security bolts on the uppper triple clamp and then use a rotary tool to cut slots in the other two.

good point! A Triumph mechanic told me that they are put on using torx headed bolts that have are designed to break off at the tip when torqued but from their experience, they usually are not broken off 80% of the time. So you could get a torx socket on there and take them off without removing the triple clamp. I can feel with my fingers that the heads are still there.

on another note, what thief is going tp take the time to take the ignition apart by unbolting it anyways?
