When coming in hot for a left turn at an intersection, I had to brake very hard and downshift fast. When down shifting into first and braking hard, the rear broke loose and the wheel locked up for a second, then a ratcheting noise was made, like a loud clicking. Wondered what that was.

sounds like your chain. it happens when, like you said, you downshift way too fast without letting the clutch grip and slow the tranny down. no biggie, just try not to do it again. a locked back wheel can be bad news, especially at speeds.

thanks for the info Kitikil. Yeah, I try to keep the rear wheel rolling most of the time. Is that the chain slipping over the sprocket? That cant be good for it.

If it's the chain jumping the sprocket you've got more serious things to worry about!!!! No, it's probably just the chain "slapping" the swingarm.

Thanks Shards, nice to hear from a Kiwi. Ill bet the riding there is awesome. I am sort of a newbie to bikes, and dig the cool information that comes from all corners of the globe. I do know that the S4 chain does travel in very close proximity to the swingarm, as mine has a nice little groove from when the rub gaurd wore through for about 100 miles. I got the 45 tooth rear sprocket and a larger front (not sure what size) to remedy that problem. Triumphs two year warranty was a selling point for me, and it has been a saving grace for this bike several times. I dont know if I will ever be able to sell this bike, as even though it is quirky mechanically at times, its looks and charm have won me over so big, that I could never part with it. And orange is the best color for a triumph. God save the Queen.
