(I know this is the SuperSports forum and I ride a Sprint, but I has so much fun on my comrades two week old 675, I wanted to post this here. --- Dale)
Just a ride report from our part of the world in Oympia, Washington.
Last Saturday (August 12) The Oly RAT Pack on a gorgeous 75 degree day in the beautiful Pacific Northwest toured to the back side of Mt. St. Helens National Park. (And thanks, Eric, for letting me try out your new Daytona 675 for about 50 twisty miles.) What a rush!
Here’s the play by play from Bill Velez and Tod Monroe:
Today's ride began at Cycle Mart in Olympia with some bench racing. The shop has quite an inventory of Triumph's, KTM's, Kawasaki's, and those oh so sexy Vespas. Think of Sophia Loren in the mid sixties on a Vespa! Eight riders began the ride including Bill (T-100), Tod (Thruxton), Frank (Speed 3), Don (Speed 3), Terry (T-Bird), Eric (675), Larry (VFR), and Dale (Sprint ST). We wound our way to Centrailia via some back roads eventually hooking up to Centrailia-Alpha road on to Morton where we ran into the Loggers Jubilee parade. From Morton then to Randle where the gang met up with Al (T-Bird Sport). More bench racing and a little rest. Bill and Terry, needing to get back home earlier, decided to ride onto Packwood for lunch, then Skate Creek to Ashford, Elbe, Yelm and Olympia. I have never seen the traffic so light and was able to take the twisties at will. Wow, what fun when the road belongs to you!. From Randle the remainder of the group rode the back side of St. Hellens to Carson. Overall a great ride with very little traffic and great weather. Until next time --- Bill
The rest of the second Saturday ride turned into the best ride I've been on in a long, long time. We headed out of Randle towards Windy Ridge and in just a few miles, Larry on his VFR decided to turn around and head home. Then Al Noble (on a beauty of a T-bird Sport), Frank, Dan, Eric, Dale and me took off. The traffic was light and eventually virtually non-existent after the tourists and other bikes turned off to Windy Ridge Lookout Point. We carried on at chicken strip removing speeds all the way to Eagle Cliff and lunch (what were all those dirty smelly hippies doing around there?). After good but slowly served burgers, we blasted off towards Cougar. 16 miles of pure gorgeous tight twisties on great empty roads later, it was time to catch our breaths. Al headed off to the east but not before he reported touching down a time or two.
Then things really got going. We turned around and ran all the way back to the Windy Ridge turn without stopping and without any traffic. I was torturing that Thruxton to make it play with the sporty triples (and I was working too, today my legs were aching from all the hanging off). With a couple of peg drags, the bike did the job. Everybody was just straight grinning and hopped up with adrenaline when we took the break. An Aprilia Tuono practically skidded to a stop so he could turn around and check out Eric's new 675. Two groups of sport bikes stopped to check out and compliment the Triumphs -- ego boosts for all of us (but especially Eric and his 675 -- and it's broken in now).
Then it was back to Randle, Morton and over to Elbe and back to town. Thanks to Frank for leading us on a straight-up kick-ass route and an absolute blast of a ride. We must have approached a 100 miles total of twisties. I know the last 5 of us on this ride couldn't have had more fun on a bike. --- Tod
