Somehow like a flip of a switch my S4 lost alot of its buzziness and really smoothed out up to 9k RPM. Now I'm wondering what could have changed to make it smooth out and was there a problem before or maybe even a problem now. My seat of the pants dyno says that I lost some power when the smoothing took place, however, I might be deceiving myself, as a smooth ride feels slower than a rough one, even though its the same speed. Here is what I believe caused the change. Let me know if I'm crazy or not.

I was pacing this slow Ford Escort up a hill, it was 2 lanes traveling the same direction, we were side by side and I was in the slow lane (right lane). As we came up upon another slower car I gassed it wide open to pull ahead and overtake the Ford Escort and move to his fast lane. When I did, I was kinda late on the gas and really had to thread the needle between the cars. (stupid mistake). Well, most of my concentration was on the cars ahead and I didn't realize that I was on the rev limiter until I felt the power drop way off. I must have been on it for a second or two before I could process what was happening and move my foot to shift up. After slowing down to a regular 75 mph I noticed that my normal vibes in the handle bars seemed to be less. Its been that way ever since. I'm really curious what could have happened. Otherwise the bike runs perfect. Does this make sense to anyone? Has anyone else had a "smoothing" experience?

could be the throttle posistion sensor.......I just recently bought a tuneboy, and reset mine (TPS) as it had a different value than 0 when closed (the only time you are supposed to change it). before i changed it it was vibrating my hands badly on even short rides. and as soon as i changed it, the bike smoothed out. I'm no expert mechanic or computer geek, but that worked on my bike! the tuneboy is a great tool for triumphs!!
Ride smart!

Other Motorcycle: anything I can get.
Do not know what your milage is at but Maybe a good blast of revs has blown some of the crud and stuff out of the ports and pipes, a good blow does an engine good now and again :hammer:

How many miles on the bike? My 2001 TT600 suddenly changed personality at about 9300 miles. It got smoother and quicker somehow, all of a sudden. Beats me how that could happen, but it changed enough to clearly feel a difference.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

3600 miles on it now. I'm glad that Im not the only one to notice an abrupt change. Im still perplexed as to what actually changed in the motor though.

Good info on the TPS, discipled1.

On the Tuneboy, do you hook it up and watch the settings while the bike is running and make changes while running? or do you check the ECU settings and change them seperately while disconnected from the bike?

I don't mean to dis respect but I suspect you may have been so gentle on the bike that the ECU had settled into a low speed mode.

Into some fierce traffic and you have to just twist the loud handle and your ecu remembers what the bike was designed for?

Will waddya think?

LCJohnny,

I flog the S4 pretty hard on a daily basis. I normally dont ride the rev limiter like I did that day, but I normally hit 13k at WOT on a daily basis.

I just went riding a few minutes ago and I definitely think that Im down on power all around.

After some searching I found this thread from FuryFour which seem to be very similar to my issue. I have the tach needle shake too and it seemed to happen at the same time as the issue I posted about above.

Diagnostics are done hooked up to the bike with ignition on (and sometimes with the engine running)
Changes to tunes are done on a PC and then you connect to the bike to 'flash' the tune to the ECU.

The "stealer" said there was something wrong with my o2 sensor
(I think) it has been a while.
Definitely isn't the o2 sensor cos our SAGEM bikes don't have one :-D

I can't think what might have changed on your bike. Nothing unusual to hit the limiter once in a while :hammer:
