I've read about it all over, and am looking at your pic, but I still don't see the damage. I understand materially what can happen - but can't visualize it. Can you post some additional angles or lift chain up?

Thanks dude. Good luck with what you do. I asked my dealer - also at my 500 now - to replace the rear with a 45 and he said he'd ask triumph. I think it may have been a brush off so I will phone them myself to complain. I'll share the info I collect. In the meantime, please help to educate me on this visually.

(I am doing this proactivley for myself).

I am confused. My chain rub block is rubbing just like that. It is original to the bike, and the bike will turn over 31,000 miles early next month. It is wearing down, but it is also protecting the swingarm from wear. Even when the bike had stock 14/42 sprockets it did its job. The initial chain and sprockets lasted 17,000 miles, and could have stayed on the bike until 20,000 miles without a problem.

So, unless I am completely confused, that rub block is a wear item like tires. The whole point is to keep any damage away from the swingarm, which isn't a wear item. The rub block shouldn't wear out in 500 miles, but it should show signs of wear. The rubbing on your chain should not affect chain wear. The odd part of all of this is that TT600 owners don't seem to notice much or care, but S4 owners are all over this issue. The stock sprockets are the same, unless I am mistaken. I guess the plastic clouds our vision or something! Don't get me wrong- I am not defending Triumph. Triumph will only make better bikes if they smoke out all the little problems that crop up and solve them through better parts for current bikes and better design in the future. I just wonder what the difference is, since there seems to be one.

Peet, if you take off the chain guard, you can look at the rub block along its full length. You will note that it is grooved where the chain links rub, with a raised center block in the middle where the barrels of the chain are. It is only held in with one screw at the front, near the pivot. That same screw holds the front chain guard bracket. With the mounting setup the way it is, the rub block can shift around a bit, so the grooves can get misaligned with the links and wear faster. It has not happened that way on my bike, but it is easy to see how it could.

I still have no one to call about this. I have not called the dealer because I'm still getting confusing information about this subject.

I have all the pictures in http://www.mercybeat.com/me/chainguard if anyone wants to look at all of them and the full size versions.

From the internet what i'm reading is
1) Thats normal, your gonna have to cover the cost like oil.

2) The wear is excessive and they will replace it under warrenty offten.

3) Not normal so induvidual paided for the sprockets/chain themselvs.

4) Triumph replaced the sprocket and chain for free and problem solved.

My bike is a 2003.
Can anyone give me a url that confirms that the 2004 or 2005 Speed Four comes with the 15/47 sprockets? The reason is that I asked 3 times... whats the difference between the 2003, 2004 and the coming 2005. each time the dealership told me that only the fuel mapping is different and that they put the latest fuel injection mapping on the bike.

So if the sprockets are different then they lied...
I also just found a phone number to call.
it's 1-678-854-2010 I'll give it a try later today.

Please can someone confirm that they got the larger sprockets for free from the warrenty?

Today at work there are 3 guys with sport bikes. Only mine has a chain thats laying on the swing arm .. Those guys seem to think it's the wrong sprockets or they put the wrong chain on. Needless to say today I've been getting all kinds of cracks from them today.

Peter Carillio (spelling?) is the customer service rep. at Triumph America. He is the person you should talk to if you don't get any satisfaction from your dealer. That rub block shouldn't wear out in 500 miles.

I'm with Will on this one. I have an '03 S4 and a little over 4,000 miles on it Before I got the 4k mile service from the dealer, my chain was getting a little loose and wore the chain guard more than usual. My dealer told me that the wear is usual especially since my chain was loose but it is covered by warranty. Do you think your chain might be a little loose?

From what I have checked, I have the 15/45 gear combo and my chain lays on the swing arm as well. I asked the dealer about changing the sprocket size and he said it is best to go with different gear sizes when it is time to replace the chain or the chain/gear wears out.

I hope things work out for you, post what you find out
