Just got a new BT010 rear and the tyre fitter told me to "run it in" for the first 100 miles.

In 'the olden days' a tyre (K70) lasted 11-12,000 and needed running in for 50 miles or 0.5% of it's life. But a modern tyre only lasts 3,000 miles so for 3% of its life it is running in!! Is this Bull???

At this rate in ten years I will be running the tyre in for 90% of its life & have fun for 500miles before buying a new one!!

No unfortunately they are right. Bare in mind however that the BT010 is no longer made by Brisgestone so next time you will have to pay out even more for a BT014 its replacement. They say its better only time will tell.
I managed to get 5K miles on my rear TT600 so 3K miles seems a bit short to me anyway. Make sure you check your pressures every two weeks.

The more I ride, the less I pay attention to what appear to be liability protection requirements. I certainly scuff in new tires, and I guess I do take it easy the first couple of times out, but it's more to remove the junk from the new tires' surfaces.

That said, I know track riders who scuff in their tires for a few laps and then wail around the track.

If you have twisty roads in your area, it is very easy to break in your tires in waaaaaay less than 100 miles. Remember, all you're doing is scuffing the slippers surface off of them. On some tires this surface is mold release compound, and on others its just the super smooth surface they get from manufacture.

All you need to do is start out on a twisty road that you like, and ride as if it's raining out. As you progress, incrementally increase your lean angle corner-by-corner. DOn't weave back and forth, btw...this does nothing.

I've used this method for 15 years on the street and racing, and it never fails. On the street, I ride 100% of however I'm gonna ride after maybe 3 miles of break-in...even that is probably an exaggeration.
