rode down to olympia last night after pulling the flyscreen off the bike. WOW does it make a difference! i thought i would get tossed around alot more, but it was actually more comfortable with the screen off...my head got tossed less and the wind wasn't cutting right to my throat. also there was an even force against my chest so it seemed i could sit a little lighter on the clip-ons.....don't think i will be putting that back on any time soon, now i just need a cluster backing???.....anyone?

Due to the fact that your about the fourth or fifth person I have encountered that has taken the flyscreen off and liked I had to try it...... it makes an unbelievable difference at speeds under 85..... over that it gets a little heavier in the chest than with the screen on but at the lower speeds the bike is even more enjoyable to ride......... I think with the right bar end mirrors it may look even meaner......

What's a flyscreen? Particular only to the S4's?

Yep... It's the little aero cap above the instrument cluster. It's supposed to deflect air just above your head. In this thumbnail it's the yellow plastic piece above the lights:

so how do the instruments' back(forward side) look? i imagine its all wires and guts. i was thinking of taking it off and putting some tiny twins on, just to look meaner, and maybe adding new analog dials. whatcha guys think. is it more trouble than its worth?

i did take it off and it's so much better. the ride is nice and i think it looks cleaner. the instruments sort of float over the twins, but there's not much you can do without buying all new instruments....hmmmmm... try it, four screws...that's it.

I think I read that you can use the back off the speed triple - anyone know for sure?

I don't know for sure, but I would be very surprised if Triumph used different clocks for any of our bikes. I would guess that they have a set of clocks for the cruisers and classics, and another set of clocks for the sports line. There isn't much reason for the to have multiple types, so if it fits an S3, I would be surprised if it didn't fit an S4.

does anyone have step by step instructions on how to remove it and is there a definitive answer as to whether or not the back of the clocks need to be covered by the speed3 piece.

i removed the flyscreen and the sp4 instruments have a back cover to protect the guts from wind, bugs, rain, etc... DO NOT BUY the speed triple instrument back. i did after reading an entry from someone and when i took it off, felt like the biggest ass. four screws, 5 minutes, and zero dollars spent is the way to go.
