Had my valve cleareances checked at 12K miles - no adjustment was necessary. Are there any issues in this area? I hear no ticking from the motor at this time. Next scheduled valve check is at 24K - should this be done sooner as a precaution? Aside from the standard oil from blow-by in the airbox, I've never have ANY major issues with my S4.

What are your experiences with the higher-mileage 599cc Triumph motors?

I ask because a concerned potential buyer (I'm selling the S4) asked.

Thanks very much.

If I recall, KeithU checked his valves twice, and never needed adjustment either time, so it is not unusual at all. I did mine and had one that was tight, and three that were at the tight end of the spec, so I adjusted all 4, so maybe next time I won't have to adjust any. It is important to log the clearances at each service for reference at future valve checks, so you might see if the shop has that if they didn't give it to you already.

im at 16K and had the usual oil blow by but it got steadily worse. Ended up having to change the gasket as it was leaking oil and up into the airbox. forget what its called, but its on the same side as the oil pressure switch.

I have done only 6k but the bike is nearly 3 years old and i have not been to a dealer to have the valve clearences checked.

Whats your opinions? wait to 12k or get them checked anyway?

I know the handbook says something like 12k or every 2/3 years.

I would think waiting until 12k would be fine. Time shouldn't make any difference on valves. Oil is a different matter. IMO it should be changed at least yearly even if the mileage doesn't warrant it.
