Need help please anyone. I have a 2002 TT and having the bike from new for 2 years I have just fitted my third chain guard and already after 150 miles its starting to wear through.
I have checked the alignment of the wheel checked the chain tension setting and all is OK. I think its down to the the chain not sitting exactly straight of the bike but I am failing to understand why, it keeps wearing the chain guard out though and I am struggling for ideas of how to fix it.
Any suggestions? :???:

My bike has a 15 tooth front sprocket on it and a 47 tooth rear. That does several things. Since both are bigger than stock, the pad doesn't wear, and I still have the original one on at 30K miles. It makes for less chain wear, since the front sprocket doesn't bend the chain as hard. Both front and rear sprockets have an odd number of teeth, so you don't wear the exact same link on the same tooth every time. That keeps things more even. Finally, since it lowers the gearing, you get more snap when you open the throttle.

is your bike still under warranty or is that over already? my bike went through maybe 6 in the first year, the dealership had to pay for about half, and the other half were covered under warranty, eventaully once triumph was willing to admit their screwup, they're replacing the stock sprockets with the 14/45 combo, and you even get a free chain out of the deal, which i needed at 15k miles anyway, but otherwise, your only real option to make it stop is buying the bigger sprockets yourself, because that helped mine a ton, it does still wear kinda slowly, but that's due to it not rubbing straight across the chain block, which isn't really the chains fault, as much as it is the rub block, again a triumph screwup i think, most bikes have chain rub blocks that bolt on in 2-3 spots, keeping them straight, the triumph ones is just held on in the middle by the chain guard, and had a lot of play in how it wants to move, so the chain is never running across it very straight,

Thanks for that guys. There appears to be a concensus developing here and that is a 15 front sprocket seems to be the way to go.
Will call Triumph even though the bike is out of warranty and have a word.

Yep, I've just installed my 3rd chain protector on the swingarm a few days ago with 14k on the ODO. I also ordered larger sprockets (15 and 45) to keep the 1 to 3 OEM ratio in hopes of lifting the chain off the swingarm more. I did notice this new rubber protector seemed a bit different in design and a tad harder in material, so it should hold up for a bit longer now.

yeah, they did start making the new rub blocks out of a new compound that's harder, but it still wears slowly, it's not nearly as bad, i used to be able to hear my chain rubbing on it, now i don't really hear anything, but if i look at it, it is wearing some, but either way, i'll get one more put on before i leave for school at the end of summer, and make sure you're keeping your chain lubed up real nice too, that'll help from keeping it wearing away,
i don't really think the problem is gonna be solved until triumph makes one that fits on and is bolted at both ends, keeping it perfectly aligned with the chain, but i don't think there's gonna be much we can do with the swingarms we have now, oh well....

Hallo I'm from Italy!
I'm changing my chain protector on my S4.
Only 2000 km.
I'm so angry for this!
Reading this post I undestand the solution is to change both front and rear sprocket, ins't it?
Is it possible to do with Triumph original parts?

clacla, triumph denied the problem for a while, but the they just "happened" to give the 2004's the 15/45 combo instead of the 14/42, so whatever, they knew what they did, but once i noticed this on a bike in the dealership, i had them swap mine for the new 2004 sprockets under warranty, they said they got a memo, that say's it's pretty much an unofficial recall, if you take your bike back in, they'll replace them, and you get a new chain out of the deal, which i needed at 15k miles anyway, but if you don't go in and complain to them about it, they're not just gonna tell you about it,

I'm so mad.
I've got 330 miles on my Speed Four. When i read this post i ran out to my bike to take a look. Damn i'm Mad! VERY VERY VERY Mad. Guys. I'm not a triumph guy. So I thought I was making a sound decision based on price, features and QUALITY!
So here are the pics.
The first shot is reference. I am looking at the part of the chain right next to the rear spring.
Next a shot of the chain sitting in the groove it's made in the guard.
Next a pic of the actual grooves being warn into the plastic.
And now... This is what really pisses me off. That black area next to the chain is the actual plastic heating up and working it's way into the chain.
Oh I'm going to be mad till i talk to the dealership... But you know what. given the time difference I might just call triumph tonight....
Oh I'm mad. I'm not saying if I had known i would not have bought the bike... But you know i don't now how much this would have factored.

Hallo!!! Always from Italy...different country...same problem
Yesterday I change the protector.
I spent a lot of time with the dealer trying to understand if they really know the problem (I'm sure they do)
At the end there was the admission!!!! But He said 'It's the first time I have a problem like this after 2000 km'
He did the change under warranty, but I'm very worry because the warranty will be off in a year, and after that I will have to pay for changing.......
