Hello All, this is my first post and unfortunately it's a problem.
I picked up my Speed Four (green) three weeks ago today, I've got 750 mi. and I'm just waiting for my service appointment to bring it in for the 600 mi. service. Yesterday I pulled off the freeway and noticed a serious knocking sound coming from the engine, the kind that gets louder with rpms. Luckily my usual parking space is in front of the dealer so I dropped in at lunch and told them my story. We ran the bike outside and couldn't quite pick out the noise, but the offered to give it a ride and let me know if anything materialized for them once it warmed up. They went for a ride and they tell me it sounds like a rod! So now it looks like it's going to be in for a while, first to get a diagnosis and then to fix it.
Does anybody else know of a similar problem or have a simple answer I can hope for until I hear from the shop?
All around it's been a great bike so far, it feels so good it brings up my confidence level enormously and makes riding quick more fun, so I'm hoping to have it back soon.

That is the first bad S4/TT600 failure I have heard.
Mine has had a trivial oil leak & I got sort of obsessive about the clutch cable but it's been so good to ride that I didn't mind that.
For a new engine to run a rod it must have been badly machined - or run without oil!!!
Make sure you fund out why it went and good luck with getting it repaired

It's the first my shop's heard of as well. They've got it apart and are telling me it was the bearings. The warentee will cover it but it's going to take a while to process all the paper work so it looks like I'm out of commision for a couple of weeks. I can't imagine what would cause it to fail either. The made on date is 01-03 and it'd been sitting in it's crate untill I ordered it a month ago. There was some corrosion on the outside (clutch cable bend, engine mount bolt heads, etc) but I can't imagine that would get inside the engine.
The oil and coolant were fine. I wonder if there's a passage that's supposed to spray some oil that was clogged or something. Any body know what's going on down in the bottomend there?

I have heard of one case of a con-rod letting go in a triple and one instance of a weak piston in a 2000 TT600. Other than that, yours is the first internal factory defect I have heard of. Sometimes a little piece of debris gets under the bearing or is cast into the bearing. Hardly anything gets by the factory QC, but things do happen. My brother had a Honda 954 that melted down due to some serious bottom end defects. Honda rebuilt it for him, just at Triumph is rebuilding your motor. That is about all you can ask for, but it still sucks to be without your bike for the time that takes.

Wow. thats strange. I just got a 2003 and when it's warm and I'm pulling in the clutch and breaking... just before i come to a complete stop the engine will make this almost ringing sound. I thought it could be a valve. It's only at 200 miles so I'm not too worried about it.

I really don't want to worry anybody else I think I just got a very uncommon crank shaft that didn't fit with the rest of the peices. I saw the engine laid out on the shop bench yesterday and everything is mint in there except for the the cam and rod bearings which show abnormal wear. The dealer, Munroe Motors in San Francisco, is pushing the repair through as fast as they can and assure me that it will be done as soon as they get the parts they need. I can't say enough about how well they've been treating me well, especially considering I bought the cheapest bike in the showroom (other than Triumph they sell Ducati, MV Agusta, and Moto Guzzi) :clown:
Thanks all and I'll see you on the road soon.

Great to hear that you are having a dealer treat you well and work hard to get you back on the road! It is a shame that the crank was bad, but it always restores our faith a little when there are good stories about a dealership to offset the bad ones! I hope it goes well and they get parts quickly.

So It's been two weeks plus since the engine came apart and the parts were ordered, but they haven't shown up at the dealership. I'm trying to be kind to them, I work a block away and I really don't want to bug them every day and become a nuisance so I've been dropping by once a week. Yesterday it was to drop off my frame sliders from skyking, since they have the bolts out anyway.
I do think it's time to get in touch with someone at Triumph to see where the parts are and why they haven't gotten to the dealer yet. I read a discussion earlier about who to contact at Triumph for customer service (may have been on a different board), does anyone know a name and a number where I could reach somebody?
Much Appreciated,
Nathan
Actually I found a number, PH: 678-854-2010 Fax: 678-854-2025, for Peter Carlillo, it was on this site, just not in the 600s section. I called and left a message, so here's to hoping he can help. For future reference, his extension is 2064.
