I pulled the S4 out for a ride and noticed immediately that it was leaking gas on the cement. I traced the wet line back to a white plastic elbow under the tank. I'm afraid the elbow is cracked but can't tell for sure.

How difficult is it to remove the tank and replace the elbow? I might as well replace them all while I'm at it. (There is a red plastic elbow next to the white.)

What about brass elbows? Do they exist and how difficult would it be to convert from plastic to metal?

I live a good 3 hours from Vegas, the closest dealership. Is it necessary to send the tank away or is this a "do it yourself" project?

Lots of questions. Sure could use your expertise. By-the-by, does anyone have the tank section of a Triumph shop manual that could be scanned and sent to me? PM me if you have suggestions.

Thanks in advance. :???:

Have you had the fuel connector recall done? Has the tank been off recently, as the O ring at the connector can often tear and leak.

Metal ones are available if you decide to go that route.

No recall work. Guess I should check.

I haven't taken the tank off the bike. What metal elbows exist? Aluminum, brass? 1st of many dumb questions (Actually, the 5th dumb question but who's counting?) but would a metal fitting interfere with electricals, etc.?

The replacement elbow is anodised aluminium. Anodised in red or silver to match the red/white colour coding on the female connectors in the tank. The female ones aren't changed unfortunately as some of us find they dont self-seal!

You may also have an outstanding recall on the shock absorbre top mount bolt. There is a small risk of it rubbing on the wiring loom.

good riding

If you don't often need to remove the tank, brass hose barbs work well in place of the plastic or metal quick fits.

They're approx .50 each and last 1, 2, 3 years now w/o problem. Even outlasted my original motor.

The tank can stll be removed, just set aside as there is plety of hose to allow for that.

I have done this opn my S4. It is very easy. There are only 3 bolts holding on the tank. Then it just lifts off. You only have about 6" of play before you disconnect anything. Disconnect the fuel pump(white electrical connector) and two small vent lines first. Then disconnect the red and white fuel lines by pushing on the metal part of the connector. At this point you will probably be leaking fuel everywhere, but it seems like you already have that problem. The dealer should give you the replacements for free, just make sure you get the clamps. After replacing the connectors, reinstall the tank. This might be a good time to check your spark plugs and air filter.
