On my way to work yesterday the fuel light came on and since I am still not totally sure how long I can go on the reserve in "commuting conditions" I looked for a gas station immediatly. This ended up taking a while and I probably went another 7-10 miles from Queens into the Bronx before spotting a station that didn't require cutting across 3 lanes of traffic at the last second.
Anyway, when I filled it up, as close to the rim of the tank as I could it only took 3.65 gallons. Given the fact that the tank is 4.7 this means the light must have come on with 1.2-1.4 gallons remaining. I thought it was supposed to be around 0.7 left. How much fuel has been left for most people when the light comes on?

Mine usually takes about the same as yours. I would rather have it come on a little early anyway. .7 gallons would leave you with about 25-30 miles to find a gas station. In town that's fine but on a longer ride in the country I'd rather have the extra warning.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. How far have you gone with the light on?

I went about 30 miles once. The tank was almost dry when I finally stopped but I was going about 85-90 mph the whole way.

my light comes on with 3.7 gal. consumed, however, my owners manual states 4.49 US gal. total capacity?? looks like around 6 or 7 tenths available, as you can rarely use every drop of fuel in a tank, depending on the internal tank shape and location of the fuel outlet.

Hi, I bought my Speed Four about four months ago and, in general, I'm inspired by its looks and handling. My only quibble is the lumpy zone up to about 3500 revs, which my dealer has had trouble improving. As for tank capacity, last night, having done a few calculations, and believing the manufacturer's claim that the tank holds 18 litres (I live in Spain), it ran out of petrol! Luckily, this happened within pushing distance of a petrol station. However, with the tank as empty as it could possibly be, I could barely get 17 litres in it. Sorry, I haven't got a conversion table from litres to gallons, but you can see that the capacity ain't quite what its made out to be - so, best take early notice of that orange light! If anyone has any tips on tuning, please let me know.

Best wishes to all. :???:

What's been getting me is the how drastic the difference in fuel consumption can be.

When commuting to work (admittedly stop and go Manhattan traffic) my light goes on at about (average) 90 miles.

A weekend ride of beating the tar out of the bike has the light going on at 145+ miles.

As a rule I gas up when the light comes on and I usually get a little over 3.5 gallons in.

There are 3.8 liters per gallon. 17 liters is 4.47 gallons, no wonder you ran out of gas!

I can usually go another 30-40 miles after the light has come on, and it's fairly accurate to the .7 gallons left.

The farthest I have gone without refueling is about 250 miles. However, I should note that I had a 3 gallon auxillary fuel cell installed:

The fuel cell is the thing hanging on the back. For an article about the installation see:

Alas, the really cool rack that my bro-in-law and I built broke after about 1500 miles, so we have some re-engineering to do. But if you want to increase your TT's fuel range badly enough, there are ways!

I agree with sangsters about the perverse fuel consumption on the S4.. Ride it slowly & 95miles till reserve, ride it fast and 130.

then it takes 14 litres to fill with 3 litres reserve. This works out at 42 miles per imp gall - I think that is 34 us mpg - & 27 miles of reserve - if you go very fast - less if you slow down?!?!?! :???:

Imperial gallons are different to US gal coz HM govt changed the pint from 16floz to 20floz at some point in history to take account of a slump [or a boom] & fool the public!. So are UK governments more devious than most or are the UK public more gullible?
