I did my oil change at 4500 miles, before i went to the dragon

Should i still take her to the dealer for the 6k mile service?

All the service items at 6000 miles are pretty easy to do, mostly checks that should be done on a regular basis. Maybe it would take an hour. I'd hate to pay $100 or so for that kind of work.

Its up to you. Its is deffinately easy enough to do yourself but you wont get a stamp in the service book, so when it comes to selling the bike you wont have a full service history. Personally I take mine to the dealers for the service - you will also get that peace of mind knowing everything has been done propperly.
The dealer should also give the whole bike a quick check so may find something you have missed.

Ive got my 12k miles service comming up, so expecting to hand over about £500. not looking forwad to that!

Ozz makes some good points.

For myself, I quit taking my bike to the dealer when I saw what they did for $250 at the first service of my Bonneville. They didn't charge extra for the scratch they put on the rear fender.

Then I had the fuel fittings on my ST changed under warranty at a different dealer. They also didn't charge for the scratch they put on the front fender.

Then I took my S4 in for the fuel fittings change and watched while they let gas flood the entire frame. I guess the fittings don't really shut off as advertised, but why didn't they know that or take precautions? Anyway, I watched helplessly while the bike got its gas bath.

I'm sure there are some shops that have super attentive experienced mechanics. But you may get a guy who does this 6 days a week, may be a little bored with it all, and is under pressure to move to the next bike. They obviously don't love our bikes as much as we do.

When I sold my bikes, I just gave the buyers a detailed rundown on the maintenance I did. I kept records of the oil and filters I bought. There were never any questions. Of course, the bikes were in pristine condition with low miles.

It's the money thing, im low on it, and was looking to save some.

I am friends with the owners and most of the employees at the local dealer, so trusting their work and treatment of my bike is not a problem.

Is whats listed in the manual everything that needs to be checked?

Most of it is just common sense checks that you can easily do yourself. The idle CO level is the only thing that you might need a dealer for, and if the bike runs fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Save the money for mods!

If you have TuneBoy (~$300) and a CO sniffer (~$150 for a really low end one) you can do that yourself.

I've been thinking of getting a Tuneboy. Where do you get a CO sniffer from? That sounds like a tool I need!

I did my own first service at (gasp) 700 miles that simply included giving the bike a good once-over and a full synthetic oil change with a new filter. My next service will be done by a "pro" for piece of mind and a cool stamp in me log book. I'm still only under 1500 miles.

Ride on!

P.S. Fury stole my sig
