G'day all,

Was doing my pre-season bike cleaning/detailing/oil change and noticed a missing hex nut which held a forged steel frame-part to the frame; the footpeg and rear brake pedal as well as other parts, connect to it. Anyways, as I was examining it, I noticed that the frame part is cracked - an apparent manufacturing defect. I've sent a fax to the local/only dealer around for a replacement part....hoping / assuming that it will be covered under warranty.

Funny, but when I first bought the bike (used, 11 months ago)the owner had to replace the same side footpeg which broke while I was test-driving the bike. Same type of break - a crack in the forged metal.

I'm wondering if any of you experienced something similar?

I can't see the pic either. If you are talking about the footpeg mount having a crack, and there was a crack in the footpeg itself, then it would more likely be the result of the bike being dropped or something than a manufacturing defect in two seperate parts.

This bracket?

Does the crack look like this one (where the front most part of the bracket bolts up)?

My bike was down on that side, and broke the peg, so I assume that was the cause. It is possible it was already there since you would only notice it if you're examining the bracket for some reason. Nah, I'm betting I broke it.

I've been living with it until I can find a replacement (anyone got one they want to sell me???). Scary as it sounds having a cracked footpeg carrier, I've jumped up and down on that peg to test it and the part doesn't even flex. Pretty heavy bracket, and bolted in three other places.

Hey EZ,

Yep, mine is cracked about 1 cm above the lower hex-bolt nut. I tightened the other ones, and it seems pretty sturdy. Yet, I was wondering how prudent it would be to ride. What if I have to stomp on the brake pedal (although I usually use the front brake much more...so maybe it's moot).

I bought my bike used with very little mileage and absolutely no sign that it had been dropped, damaged etc.

Wish I knew how to put a pic up here, I'd show ya exactly.

How long yours been that way? Did you ever price the part?

Thanks,

If it were me, I'd just take the bracket off and have it welded. It would probably be best to "V" out the crack a bit with a grinder, and have it TIG welded. That would be the strongest and least visible repair. Should be about a $20 job. Then you could just spray it with a semi-gloss Rust Oleum rattle can. That area is normally under a compression load, so it should be OK to ride it until it is repaired.

That bracket is cast aluminum and very brittle. I think they cost about $80 from a dealership, but that was a number of years ago, so it might be more now. I got through a few of them.

Just FYI....
I broke the same bracket on the other side, and it cost roughly $175 Canadian to replace. I was told that welding that kind of metal does not work well and can be very expensive.
Mine broke because I dropped the darn bike, though; it was not a defect.

Thanks for the info.

It's a real pisser though, 'cause I never dropped the bike. BUT, my first post here last year, just days before I bought it, was asking if a broken foot peg was common occurence on Speed Fours. I had tested the bike and as I was riding it, the darn thing (also cast aluminum) just snapped off. (I weigh barely 165lbs).

Now, I'm wondering if the bike had been dropped. But there seemed to be no apparent damage elsewhere. The previous owner said that the dealership gave him a replacement footpeg since the bike didn't look dropped.

I'm hoping that they'll extend the same courtesy to me!

PS. Checked the FAQ's but still unsure how to post a picture...does it really have to be on the 'net' somewhere? Can't I upload one from my PC to this board?

It doesn't necessarily mean it was dropped. It could have been backed into by a car (but not hard enough to tip it) while parked, or something of that nature. It really doesn't matter if there is no other damage.
