I've been advised to post this here I hope I'm in the right place I've just had a bad crash thankfully there were no fatalities I was going home along a straight road when my TT600 started accelerating rapidly without warning! I closed the throttle to no effect I pulled the clutch to no effect I cogged it down it spat me off I've been in hospital for 24 hrs on a board and in a brace but thankfully I'm very sore but humbled I have one recollection of reading an account of this before where a Triumph just collected raced out of control from a dealers and wrote itself off this was a letter sent into a well known bike magazine from a badly injured rider who had to take issue with Triumph I am stunned because before this the bike was stunning.I would be very grateful for any experiences similar in type. :???: :???:

so it just started going faster by itself?
that's scary, maybe a ECU problem? Mid '80's Audi 5000's used to do that.
I'm glad to hear there's no serious injury.

I'm confused as to how pulling in the clutch had no effect, did the cable snap?

you ok? d*a*m*n*e*d lucky there were no cages or armco to surf through! Well done staying on for so long!!!!!

As for causes well the TT600 throttle is not "fly by wire" so whilst the fuelling can be increased by the ecu the air supply cannot. The wire has to be pulled to open the butterfly. So imho the most likely cause woudl be the very old-fashioned 'killers' of throttle cable routing, pinching or crushing.

The smaller problem :???: is cable routing herewhen the bars turn right, the cable outer pulls out of one of the end cups and when they are straightened it catches so not sitting back down. The throttle stays open 1/4" or 6mm - On the bench that gives you 3-4000 rpm & lots of noise - scarey.

The worse problem is cable pinching or crushing. If the springy steel throttle outer cable is pinched between tank and frame or frame & engine it can press in on the throttle wire slowing it closing or stopping it closing altogether. Crushing happens when a single large force on the throttle outer changes it's shape permanently. The usual cause is the cable falling into the lockstops! , The cable feels free but you open her up & she stays open -

So if you get the chance I woudl check the cable for slack where it runs, how tight that run is, scuffing on the outer and how freely the inner moves. If it was serviced just before I expect that the garage may be liable!!!

Best thing is your health

Good luck Jon

Off-topic a bit, but the Audis did not do that. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) finally got off their asses and concluded that the problem was, as Audi asserted, operator error. The drivers thought they were standing on the brake pedal. They were actually standing on the gas pedal. There were ergonomic factors involved, mostly having to do with a slight offset (to the left, IIRC) of the brake and gas pedals compared to the vehicles to which the drivers were accustomed (mostly big American sedans).

Just wanted to clear that up...

ok... I never investigated it, I just remember hearing that at the time. I'm glad it wasn't audi's fault, dam nice cars (for cars) my mate has a 2001 s4 fst as hell, but I can lose him in the twisties

Whilst lying in the haze of the 'crash' room in the hospital It was rumoured that Homer was heard to shout loudly ''D'oh'' and something about a kill switch and how wonderful hidsight was etc........... The cables have now been thoroughly checked and they are perfect no nips kinks bends etc so as soon as I can remove the tank and air box without blacking out I'll be at it. :hammer:

Glad you are relatively OK. It almost sounds like you were rear ended, but I'm sure you would have noticed if that were the case. It's definitely a strange occurrence.
