Okay, I've owned my '02 TT600 since April '03. For the past two years, it has had an oil leak that I've been off and on chasing down. The dealer replaced the vent valve, the sump pan gasket, and the shifter seal (twice). The bike still leaks oil, and it appears to be coming from around the shifter seal.

My question: Could something have gone wrong internally (bad bushing, etc) to allow oil to build up behind the shifter seal in a way it should not? I can move the shaft back and forth about 3/8 of an inch, but I've noted that there is also play in the shafts on other bikes. I did put the bike down hard on the track once, breaking the end of the shift lever, but the leak existed before that.

The shop mechanic had a nice insight when he suggested that the internal pressue of the transmission is too high due to inadequate venting, but that doesn't help me solve my problem.

Believe me, I've done my homework on this one, and it's been at least a year since I last brought up my problem. Just hoping someone might have new insights

have a look at the top of the alternator cover where the loom goes in, mine leaks from there but i have cleaned it and smothered it with silicone sealant, so far so good!!!!

Thanks, Russ, but that isn't the problem. This is the darndest thing because I have tried every fix that has been discussed for the past two years. This is what makes me think something is amiss inside of the cases.

The factory repair manual doesn't do a very good job of providing a detailed look at the shift shaft internals, but it looks like there might be a bushing involved, and I'm intuiting that this bushing may not be working properly, thereby allowing more oil through than it should, which is then being pushed through the seal.

I just wish I could find someone to tell me I'm on the right track or totally off base!

I just had the shifter seal replaced on my 650 due to an oil leak, but it began leaking again. When I took it back the mechanic called Triumph and was told that there was an updated seal that should have been sent in place of the one he recieved. Just something to check into.

Okay, I made another attempt at identifying the oil leak on my TT. I ran the bike standing still, revving it hard. I got a couple of drops of oil to collect on the sump drain bolt and on the bolt that holds the drain hose retention loop. I cleaned up these oil spots and the rest of the engine. I ran the bike again. No oil this time. But, it does seem to be wet around the area I've cicled in the pic below:


This shot is of the countershaft area w/out the sprocket. What is the circled item? Is it possible it could leak oil?

I have this same problem, I replaced the 0-ring on the selector shaft once and the dealer did it a second time but I still have the leak. Could this be a pressure issue?

Just for grins, did you make sure that the stator side cover is properly snugged/torqued?
