thanks guys... i will check the connections.

i checked the screws that connect the cables to the battery; they are nice and tight. where else should i check? thanks.

How about those connections on the stator (generator) cover? If those aren't secure, your battery will never recharge.
Take your current battery to a shop to be load tested, to see if it is beyond the point of taking a charge ( and to rule it out).
