I need to change the sprockets on the stock 2002 S4 I recently picked up due to the chainguard wear issue. I already ordered a 15 front and 45 rear from sprocket specialists. Today while browsing through the old posts I read in one post someone mentioned that a longer chain is needed if going up from 14/42 to 15/45. There are several posts regarding the sprocket conversion but this is the only one I found mentioning the need for a longer chain. Was wondering if it's true or not? The current chain has just over 2,000 miles on it so it's perfectly good and I would like to use it, but would hate to put on the new sprockets only to find out that the old chain doesn't fit and have to wait a couple weeks for a new one.

You're going to need the new (longer) chain. Perhaps you can save the old stuff in case you ever want to switch it back.

I don't rembmer exactly how long the stock chain is. I think it is 106 links, but I don't remember. 15/45 you need 110, also by faulty memory. I just put one on the bike last summer, but that was long enough ago that I don't remebmer for sure.

According to the manual for TT600 & Speed Four:

42/14 = 106 links
45/15 = 108 links

Recommended chain is DID 525 VM2

Thanks for the replies, I guess I can order the 110 link and shorten it if needed.

So did you end up cutting off the two links and fitting the 108?

By the way, I would never use an old chain with new sprockets...no matter how new the chain looks. I have the original factory chain for the TT that had about 1500 miles on it...looks brand new. Even my last chain with 11,000 miles on it looks new. But there is no way I'd stick either on a new set of sprockets. It's not that I think it is unsafe, it's just that you get wear patterns on the chain/sprockets and if you use an old component it will shorten the life of the new part considerably.
