A while back my stock silencer had the honor of being scraped up by yours truly in a misfortunate turn of events. The end result was surface scratches on the silencer and I figured why not paint my silencer black as I am going to buy a new silencer for it any way. So I decided to go ahead and do that.

I currently dont have any pics currently but it looks rather good. It has also been a limited time since it has been painted and ridden with, but was wondering if a full ceramic coat on the headers collecters and such would make the bike run cooler...

I look at it this way, the less heat the exhaust system absorbs the more exhaust heat is carried away from the engine.Also the silencer is very cool to the touch... so much so I can put my hand on it after a good ride and not get burned.

Any one have any thoughts into this? I dont think I will try it... but if I see good enough reason and have the time to do it I might. I am really only starting this just to mix up the forum a bit! :-D

I think you're looking at this a little wrong. The reason that the exhaust is cool is because the ceramic paint isn't conducting the heat from within - i.e it's staying *internal* to the system. So heat that was radiating out to cool the system remains inside and hence the exhaust is probably running alot hotter than was intended. These are just my initial thoughts but I think if you do the whole system you could have problems.

The reason that racers wrap their exhausts with insulation or ceramic coat them is to keep the heat in. Keeping the exhaust gas hotter somehow makes it exit the bike faster. I don't know the physics of it, but I doubt that anybody would do it if it didn't do something useful. If rapid cooling of the exhaust gasses was a useful thing to have happen, exhaust pipes would have cooling fins.

Will is correct. I have a cafe'd sportster with a supertrapp 2-1 system. It has been dipped to ceramic coat it inside and out. This speeds the exhaust gasses out of the headers much more quickly. The wave theory involved is rather complex. Do a google search for exhaust waves and you should at least get an idea of the concept.

I don't think it requires remapping like an open can would. It is probably a bit more like putting a K&N filter on. It is a small change, not a big one, but I don't know for sure.

Ya I was thinking it would be along the lines of a heat wrapping the exhaust almost. I think it would be too small of a change to get me to actually do that. But the silencer being cooler makes me feel better when parking in an area where pedestrians are walking. It wont burn them if they accidently hit it or somthing.

I always worried about that for some reason. :razz:

I wish I could remember this from my physics class because it's really pretty interesting. The idea behind ceramic coating is two fold. First like explained before it keeps the heat in which runs exhaust gas a little faster. A good example of this is the idea that you actually want hot exhaust entering into a turbo. I wish I could remember the term for this but I'm drawing blanks.

Second and more importantly (at least with cars because of the engine bay) it keeps heat off the surrounding area. This is very important for cars since you have your headers running in the same bay as you intake. On a bike however I don't know how crucial it would be. My overall thought though is your not going to get much performance out of this mod. But then again these bikes are so incredibly tuned any little increase makes a difference. I guess it's how serious you are.
