Hi guys, this is quite a long one so bare with me...

Long ride (4 hours) in torrential rain - after which bike starts playing up. Stalling and misfiring all over the place. Take it to the garage who tell me one of the spark plugs had water in it. After a new spark plug and coil (which was damaged from the water) I get the bike back.

Now the bike is showing the following symptoms:
• It feels very retarded. After a ride out today it was only kicking in about 8,000 rpm and even then didn't feel anything like it used to.
• At idle it seems to 'chugging' slightly but the tick over is fine. It isn't stalling or anything but you need to up the revs to about 6,000 to get the thing moving from stationary.
• There is virtually no acceleration/power anymore, and it almost feels like it's not firing on all four cylinders.
• There is a high-pitched whine when decelerating which wasn't there before. Almost like a turbine spinning down. This is a new noise and not one that was there before.
• The problem is intermittent. Some of the time it's kicking in just fine, other times it wont. It seems to consistently happen at lower revs though.

I'm pretty sure it's to do with the plugs/coil/etc but hoping you guys might have some more specific ideas. Could it be to do with the new coil/plug? Might it be the mapping which is out? Could it be the distributor? Please help! Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I does sound like ignition = poor firing, but it could 'just' be water in the fuel/blocked filter???

Apparently if the hoses aren't fitted back on the IAC valve then that makes a whistling noise which could be your turbine.

When you say it's intermittent, do you mean it goes on and off during a ride or that it will be fine one ride and then a dog the next?

I can only guess that the coil was already knackered as rain shouldn't damage it (we live in England!!!). Was it the mechanic who told you what was done or the muppet on reception?

Hey --

This being my first post im sorry in advance for anything sounding outta the norm... im a yank after all.

Your problem sounds very much simlar to a problem i had a year or so ago on my ninja. It was showing all the things that your bike does. I found that it was a combo of a few cooked plug wires and a bad coil. it turned out that only 2 or 3 cylinders would fire to a cycle and make the bike really dog down. on some dry days it would run fine then just give up agian. after i replaced those wires and such it was good as gold. just go back and mke shure everyhting is tight.

hope this helps

Don't worry about sounding like a yank. It is an occupational hazard that a lot of us face.

The problem could be a poor connection in the plug wire that was replaced. It is fairly easy to put the coil back onto the plug without getting it pushed down all the way.

You have to take off the tank and the airbox to get to the plugs, and there are four hoses and one electrical connection that attach to the bottom of the airbox. One is a drain hose- no big deal. One is a vacuum hose. Problem if not connected. One goes to the IAC valve. Problem if not connected. One goes to the crankcase vent. Problem if not connected. There is also an opening that is used by the California stuff that should not be drilled out or should be covered by a red plastic cap.

Your problems sound like a bad IAC valve, and getting the IAC valve connection back onto the airbox halfway or not at all will produce some of the same symptoms. The IAC valve looks like a pie shaped piece of plastic with a lot of corrugated vacuum hoses sticking out. Pull your gas tank and look under the airbox to make sure the hose is there and connected properly. That is the first place I would look.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.
