There are wrenches for doing that. I don't have one, unfortunately. You unload the rear of the bike by hanging it from the garage rafters (if you are me) or some other way (if you are more sane or more creative) and loosen the bottom ring. Then you crank the preload up as much as you want then retighten the bottom ring good and tight so it doesn't back off again. I have used a long screwdriver and a hammer to tap the rings to tighten and loosen them without jacking up the bike, but that is not exactly the recommended method, and I haven't tried it on a Triumph.

How much you weight? Preload is basically matching the bike's sag to your weight. You need a tape measure and a helper to properly set preload.

I weigh around 13 stone - between 13st7lb & 12st7lb depending on how many pies.....lol

TT sixxer is right about the best way to set preload except I haven't got any friends :-D .
So instead I use the PB settings in the sticky suspension sticky from Triumph Supersports forum

In fact I set front & back to PBtrack for a trackday last year and have gone back to PB road at the front but not the rear. That felt good all summer.

Now it has got colder it feels overdamped which I think is a mixture of thicker oil and me not going for it so hard on slick roads so to get the very best I should probably go back to standard damping. Except it is cold in the garage & I am not riding as much .... Alright I feel guilty now I will probably reset it tomorrow.

As preload affects the bike's attitude & ride height not the spring rate that would stay the same.

Happy for any of the more active suspension tuners to correct this.

Also a query from me for any suspension wizards I have just changed tyres from 010s to Diablos and the ride feels harder or noisier - a bit less compliant. Are the tyres that different or is it just a new thick tyre carcass not flexing much in cold weather :???:

My settings are similar to that exept my compression and rebound settings. On the front my compression is .25 from full in and rebound is .75 from full in. On the rear my preload must be more than 44 threads showing because it's cranked down quite a bit because I weight close to 200. My compression is .25 from full in and rebound is .50 from full in.

Making the forks rebound less stiff than its compression is very important to keep those headshakes in check.

I helped my mechanic change preload using the screwdriver/hammer approach mentioned by Will. Although we had the shock spanner wrench, there wasn't enough room around the shock to use it. The bike was simply resting on its tires and the sidestand. It took maybe ten minutes to do.
