My D6 has only done 2,800 km and I recently noticed an oil leak. Upon further investigation found a considerable amount of oil in the air intake. Is this a common problem? What is the fix for this?

First of all hello and welcome to the forum. I recently had the same problem on my '02 TT600. It is the centrifugal crankcase breather valve. It can be warped by excessive heat, and being that you are from Australia I know that shouldn't have been a problem :-D . When it becomes warped it loses it's ability to hold the oil in the crankcase, and it blows past into the airbox. You may also experience some oil smoke from the exhaust at startup as the oil in the airbox is sucked into the engine and burned off. It's a little disoncerting at first, but it is an easy fix at your dealer and is covered under warranty if it is still eligible.

Again, welcome and enjoy the Triumph .

Cheers,
Schmitty

Thanks for your reply. I will be speaking my Triumph dealer today. Just gearing up for a big trip and noticed this. Glad I did before going on holidays.

Hey, anyone know what that thing costs? I've got the same leak, and while my bike is still under warranty, it would be a lot easier for me to change it myself instead of dropping the bike off at the dealer 60 miles away. I've still got the plastic fuel fittings for the same reason; maybe they'll just give me the parts.

I'm pretty sure the dealer said the parts were around $150. But, don't quote me on that. The parts consisted of a new breather valve and gasket.

I'll check, but if it is that much, I think I'll be dropping it off at the dealership!

I've had this done on mine and have the invoice with part numbers somewhere - will dig it out and post it if you are interested.
Also have an exploded diagram from the Triumph Microfiche I picked up recently

I just replaced the Crankcase Breather seal on my '00 TT600. It was part # T3600805 and cost me $33.01. It was no big deal to replace; pop out the old one and press in the new one. Hope this helps.

Cool. That doesn't sound too bad. Do you need to remove the cover? And Rik, if you have a way to post the diagram, that would help.

I understand the S4 is very similar to the TT600, in which case yes, you've got to remove the breather cover first. The seal is a round metal collar, about 1.25" dia. with a rubber-like membrane. The seal is pressed into an indention in the breather cover.
Just to be sure, you might want to order a cover gasket too, prior to starting. I was able to re-use mine, but I was very lucky. If you are mechanically inclined and have the necessary punches, you could easily make a new gasket out of gasket material found at most car parts stores.
Sorry I don't have any pictures. I was in too big of a hurry to get my bike back on the road. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Don

P.S. You might want to double-check that part nuimber, as it is for a '00 TT600, but I think they're the same.
