Here's the story for anyone who cares, but I just got a 2001 TT 600 from a certified dealer here in Denver (Erico Motorsports). I had it one day and it died on me. Apparently the battery was dead by the time I got it home. So I brought the battery into the shop (Erico) and they charged the battery the whole day but said it wouldn't hold a charge. So I bought a new batter online and installed it myself (per the manual's instructions). She ran great for about a week (3 rides) and started dying on me as I held the clutch in at lights. Then the control panel was bugging out showing me all sorts of numbers and turning on and off. I then took it in again to the shop (Erico) and they told me it was a rectifier/regulator problem and because the bike was sold as is they would help me out by covering the labor charges. However, they charged me $289 for the part which I found on the internet for $109.

Anyway, I had them do the work, and as expected it ran fine... for about another week. I took the bike up to Boulder bout a 60 mi. round trip (after another 3 rides) and when I got back the oil pressure light kicked in. She then died about a mile from my house. I checked the oil level and it was bone dry. I then went to a gas station and one of the guys there had some oil he used for his harley (20w50) said it would work fine in my bike (TT600 Manual says 15w50 half or full synthetic). I put in the oil bout 3 quarts and it started right up. Drove it home and parked it.

And now I haven't been able to get it started again. Does anybody know what the problem could be?? I am in the process of draining out all the oil I put in and am gonna put in the recommended oil. But I don't know if that'll work.

Please any suggestions for a new tri owner would be extremely helpful.

Thanks,

Bryan

P.S. I also noticed that once i removed the left faring that there were three hoses by the left shifter that were bundled together but not connected to anything. Could this be a problem??

I drained the oil and there was over a gallon in the bike is that normal?? What is the specs on how much oil a 2001 TT600 requires??

Thanks,

Bryan

The stated capacity is 4.2 liters. That is about 4.5 quarts, so there should be a little over a gallon including the filter.

The bundled hoses on the left side of the motor are various drains and vent hoses. They go somewhere at the top, but shouldn't be connected to anything at the bottom.

As far as the oil disappearance, I don't have a lot of ideas. TT600s are sturdy beasts, and they typically don't use oil. There are a few places that oil might leak. The stator wiring sometimes leaks if it wasn't installed right. The output shaft can leak, especially if the chain has been run too tight for a long time. I think there was a report of a leak from the gear shift shaft, but I don't remember for sure about that one. The only way I can imagine that your bike got bone dry is if it didn't have oil in it from the shop, but I don't know why the low oil light would not have practically jumped off the instrument cluster and beat you over the head if you were running without oil.

Did you find evidence of leaks under the bike? If it burned that much oil, you should find a whole lot of oily residue in the exhaust pipe.

Keep us posted on how things go for you, and good luck finding the problem.

when you checked the oil and it was dry, did you screw it all the way in then pull it out, or dip it in w/o screwing it in? The oil light coming on could be from the oil pressure sensor getting a bit of corrosion in it... its in an exposed spot, it happened to my S4... a litte steel wool and dielectric grease and it was all good

when i checked the oil i pulled out the stick and wiped it off then screwed it back in all the way then unscrewed it and checked it. after adding the harley 20w50 oil it started enough to get her back home and i added 2 more qts. of valvoline 20w50, but the LO Oil indicator was still on and she hasn't started back up since last thursday. I did drain the oil that i put in to put in the recommended 15w50, but i have not yet put in the 15w50 and will do so later today. Please let me know again if you have any thoughts... also where exactly is the part you indicated needed corrosion removal on your bike seeing as that may be the issue. Please remember new TT600 owner here. It will definately be nice later to be able to help out new buyers with these questions

The oil pressure sensor is on the right side of the motor, near the bottom front of the motor. If you pull the right side plastic, you will see an oil line going from the head to a fitting near the bottom of the motor. The pressure sensor screws into the fitting and has a wire that connects back to the wiring harness at the top of the motor. It is less confusing to look at than it is to describe.

Again another question for you guys helping me out. Is there a big difference between Mobile 1 T4 15w50 Racing oil that is recommended in the manual and Mobile 1 15w50 fully synthetic oil?

Again,

As far as I know, Mobil 1 is Mobil 1, and the only significant difference is viscosity. The turn signals have a disconnect fitting in the wiring so you can take the fairing off, unhook the turn signals, and set the assembly aside while you do your thing with the rest of the bike.
