I've read in magazines that WD-40 will degrade the O-rings, but that, of course, doesn't make it true. They say kerosene works well with no ill effects. I'd like to know myself if it is bad because WD-40 sure does work well for cleaning.

I've heard brake cleaner is good. Gets rid of all of the crud. Is safe with the rubber and evaporates away.

I can vouch that WD40 ruined my fork seals on an old bike. I thought it would keep the front end moving nicely if I coated the forks with WD40 on a regular basis. I was going through fork seals every 6 months before I was told about WD40 and rubber.

The factory wants you to use parafin, so I've had good results with 100% Parafin lamp oil.

Chain maintenance is a very emotional issue for some.

WD40 is OK for cleaning, but keep in mind that it also acts as a penetrating degreaser.

I use PJ1 black label chain lube for...well...chain lube. YMMV.

I am still using gear oil from a "Loobman" chain oiler. Using this I adjusted the chain only once in 8,000miles. A little bit of fling but being oil it cleans off easily. As it is oil the chain doesn't appear to get grungy and need cleaning - at this rate I will never need to change sprockets. I may leave the chain to my descendants!!

I recently tried Motorex Chain Clean 611 and it did a great, quick job of cleaning the chain. It's got WD-40 and anything else I've tried beat by a mile. It's made in Switzerland.
