I am currently considering riding an S4 from Albuquerque, NM to Seattle, WA in the fall, sometime between Sept 25 and Oct 4. Does anyone have any ideas or tips about how to get from the start to the finish?

Know where you want to go and what you want to see but don't schedule your ride. For example, don't leave NM and plan a specific time to be in Pagosa Springs, CO. By doing that, you take away from just enjoying the ride to being bound by time. I think it works out much better that way :-) Enjoy the trip and post some pics.

I agree with the above posts. Map out your gas breaks and enjoy the ride. If time is a factor, the only solution is more speed - not always a plus as you'll miss so much beautiful scenery. Part of the joy of a long trip is flexibility, whether in the time or the route taken. I live for the long trips!

Well time isn't much a factor. I plan to take at least 5-7days to make the trip. Basically I want to take a route that will have the most to offer in terms of scenery.

If you have to rely on maps to plan your on route, look for roads that parallel water. They are usually pretty and curvey. Also stop at a rest stop or call the board of tourism, and get a tourist map. In addition to attractions, they usually show all of the state maintained/numbered roads, so you can count on services (gas, food, hotel, ets), and there is a good chance of good pavement. Also major routes (traffic, cops) are usually marked in a diferent color, so they can be avoided, unless they are marked as scenic by-ways. Get a couple of them, so you can highlight routes and take notes, then throw it away after your trip. Another good thing is to get a topo map. Ridge roads are fantastic for scenery, valey roads can be very curvey.

The reason you find yourself sitting on your nuts is that they're overly large.
