Sounds like you have an intermittent short or break in continuity. Have fun with the multi-meter, and be prepared for a whole lot of patience. Once you find the problem, it will be straight forward to fix, but it's likely to take a fair amount of time and methodical continuity checking to find it. If you don't have a wiring diagram, now is the time to get one. Start checking around the steering head, since the wiring there is subject to constant flexing. You may find you have a faulty kill switch, a fault in the wiring to your ignition switch, or some combination of the two. Once you have thoroughly checked continuity and the connections in those areas, then work back through the wiring harness. It could be anywhere, unfortunately, and it could be as simple as a connector which has backed out somehow to a worn bit of insulation, or some other problem. Checking the wiring to the starter button is probably even more important, since I would expect problems elsewhere to cause the bike to cut out when it is running.
Then you will have to check relays if you haven't found the problem.
Electrical problems suck.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.
