Did you check your fuse and starter relay

Did you check all your fuses and starter relay. Maybe the push button start on the handle bar could be defective.

Hi I haven't checked these yet.I need to get a multi metre.how do I locate the starter relay and what to check for?

Today I put bike on trickle charge and it started but died after a few seconds.this has never happened before!

I was thinking to buy new switch for starter and a new starter would this make.sense?or is it better to put it into a dealer to find problem which I can't really afford!

I'm really stuck on what to do next.

I'll buy a metre and see what I can find

Many thanks

Steve

Test battery with digital multi-volt meter

You need to check your battery with a voltmeter while bike is running. You should get a reading of 13.5 to 14 volts if everything is working. R/R and stator. On mine my stator is fried as I found out today after pulling stator out. Testing both stator and R/R is not that difficult. But you must check the battery first . It's the easiest thing to do, make sure your bike is running while performing the readings on your voltmeter.

I didn't catch the year of your bike so this is just a theory. My TT is very temperamental on its starting procedure. It has something to do with the O2 settings, a dealer is needed to fix this, and or the tune in the computer. I think, and don't quote me on it, a tune for the 2002 TT works good at curing a lot of these problems.

A trick I use to start my TT is to turn on the key and wait for the fuel pump to finish priming. Now this is the important part. Press and hold the start button THEN pull in the clutch. It will do one of two things. Fire, sputter, die or run perfect. If it did the former turn of the key and start over. If the latter, go riding. This is a trick I was taught by the dealer the day I bought it. Let me know if this works. So far it always works for me.

Unfortunately this isn't a cure but more like a way to put off getting the cure. I think the problem is with the tune in the computer and or the adjustments at the throttle bodies, when was the last time they were synchronized? Mine needs to go to the dealer too.

hi my bike is a 02 model all yellow.done 24k miles.it had the big service done at 16k if i remember at a triumph dealer and all maps were up to date then.

i have tried this trick did nothing at all will try again later see how it pans out.

i really dont know what to do next.tomorrow i will buy a multi metre and check and try bump starting the bike!(will it bump with a dead stator)

i can hopefully change this as i found the thread which looks very helpfull.

if not maybe the throttle bodys need balanceing does this need to be done at a dealer??

what are the common sighns for this??

Throttle bodies alone wouldn't do this to a bike, just add to the problem. But a characteristic of needing to balance them is a really rough idle, and running increasingly better with more throttle.

I want to say the problems aren't electrical, but please do the test on the charging systems.

I'm only throwing some ideas here.
plugs, how old. when old they have a harder time firing under compression.
fuel filter, older= clogging
air filter, same as fuel

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hi cheers for your help and ideas!

The plugs are 500 miles about two or three months old!
I have not changed the air or fuel filter In 20k miles.they should be on my list I guess.

I do run injection cleaner every few months !

The engine when it fires up sounds fine runs smooth as a wistle !
Just does not start.

I got a metre today so will. Check tomorrow the voltage.

As I said the reg rec is new and my bro(car tech) thought it was charging as it should.

But still it won't always start.?

Very bizzare!

Cheers guys for help

Sounds like you have an intermittent short or break in continuity. Have fun with the multi-meter, and be prepared for a whole lot of patience. Once you find the problem, it will be straight forward to fix, but it's likely to take a fair amount of time and methodical continuity checking to find it. If you don't have a wiring diagram, now is the time to get one. Start checking around the steering head, since the wiring there is subject to constant flexing. You may find you have a faulty kill switch, a fault in the wiring to your ignition switch, or some combination of the two. Once you have thoroughly checked continuity and the connections in those areas, then work back through the wiring harness. It could be anywhere, unfortunately, and it could be as simple as a connector which has backed out somehow to a worn bit of insulation, or some other problem. Checking the wiring to the starter button is probably even more important, since I would expect problems elsewhere to cause the bike to cut out when it is running.

Then you will have to check relays if you haven't found the problem.

Electrical problems suck.
