New Member with a Question

So i got my license in July and bought an 02 TT600 with 6k miles on it shortly there. Im now at about 8k miles and its spitting oil out the front of the cam cover gasket. Im fairly mechanically inclined, i have a bs in mechanical engineering. So i figured i would be able to slide the cam cover out from between the frame, but it seems to be stuck in there. Ive tried pulling it out from the top and the front, no luck. It seems to be hanging up on the cam gears and the frame on the right side. It only seems like i need about a half inch or so of clearance to get it out. Has anyone else had to change their cam cover gasket? If so, do you have to drop the motor out? I dont have the tool for the motor mounts, and im not sure of what is all involved. Im getting frustrated and i just want to get out riding again.

Thank you,
Jason

Welcome. For whatever reason, some TT600/Seed Four/Dayton6 cam covers can be removed with no issues, but others, like the two I had, require that the engine be dropped in the front one or two inches.

To lower the engine, you don't need to remove it completely. Dropping the front is done by supporting the sump pan with a jack, and removing the head-to-frame mounting bolts, the upper rear mounting bolt, and loosening the the mounting adjusters and lower rear mounting bolt nut (don't remove the bolt). The engine will then pivot down using the jack. The radiator may have to be taken loose from the frame and engine mounting points.

The procedure for reinstalling the engine is more complicated due to the sequence of tightening the adjuster and mounting bolts. You need a special lock ring tool for the adjusters, but this can be made from a cheap socket. You also need a larger Allen socket for the adjusters. If you are to do this yourself, I recommend getting a Triumph service manual from a dealership, bikebandit.com, or a used paper copy on the TRat classifieds or another source, as it explains the sequence and give the torque specs. For your information, all electronic copies are pirated.

Still having trouble

BombFactory, thank you for the advice. I managed to make the socket that i needed to lower the engine. I changed the cam cover gasket. When i went to reassemble to engine mounts, i was following the service manual, and was having trouble follwing the sequence for tightening the bolts. The manual claims to torque the upper rear nut and bolt to 70Nm. When i had the torque wrench set to about 65Nm, the nut stripped off the bolt. Not sure if maybe its a misprint and shouldnt be 70Nm, or maybe the nut was bad. Any ideas?

70 Nm is correct for the rear bolts. You want to make sure you have the aluminum spacer in place on the top bolt. If the nut or bolt stripped, they were probably stretched from previous tightening. If it's just the nut, you'll be able to find one at a good hardware store; get a grade 8 nut. If the bolt is damaged, you'll probably have to get one through Triumph, or at a good hardware store that can special order something that long with the same head.
