Oil overflow at shutdown

My 2000 TT600 spits about a quarter cup of oil at shutdown when it reaches over 160 degrees. The leak occurs under the rear part of the gas tank. I haven't pulled the tank off yet - are there any oil overflow valves or connections under the rear of the tank?

Thanks!!

The only way oil can get up near the back of the tank is to be blowing past the centrifical breather seal and up the vent hose to the airbox. There it can pool to the left hand side of the airbox and flow out its drain hose when you park the bike, or seep out the joints in the airbox. But if the drain hose is unhooked it can drain oil all over the back half of the motor. That hose plugs onto a nipple on the far left-hand side of the airbox and goes down by the front sprocket cover.

First thing I would do is to check/correct the oil level. If there is too much oil in the engine it could be forced out by the breather. If the level is low the seal has probably failed and is letting oil out the vent hose. Either way same effect. Its not hard to replace. Just order one from bikebandit. It actually takes longer to get the bodywork off than it does to do the repair. It probably wouldn't hurt to replace the breather itself because if I remember correctly Triumph upgraded it on newer TT's.

One more thing. Pay attentoin to where the bolts you remove go and make sure you put them back in the same place. If you don't it can cause another oil issue. One bolt has a washer to seal it up because that hole is drilled into the oil gallery.

I agree with kubbie; it sounds like a bad breather seal. To add to the above, you'll want to remove the fuel tank and air filter. Clean all of the oil out of the airbox, and you may need to replace the air filter if it is saturated. You will want to remove the vacuum hose from the right side of the airbox that goes back to the ECM, and blow it out with compressed air. You'll also want to separate the ISCV stepper motor from the plastic vacuum hose housing (the piece located on the back of the engine where four vacuum hoses connect), and clean out the inside of the housing and blow air through the vacuum hoses. Check out Bikebandit.com under 2000 TT600 airbox: iconHERE I'm talking about numbers 14 and 15. There is also a vacuum line on some of the fuel regulators on the right side of the fuel rail. Remove and blow through this hose also.

If you are leaking that much oil each time you shut the engine off, chances are that the vacuum lines and ISCV have oil in them. If you do not blow out the hoses and ensure there is no oil in the ISCV, you will probably experience cold start and idle issues down the road, and the ECM will not be getting proper barometric readings. It is in your best interest to be safe and clean them all out.
