Rev counter faulty

Has anyone come across a fault where the rev counter can work fine for the first 5 or 10 mins of a journey, and then the needle will either start jumping or just drop down to zero?

Is this something that can be fixed easily?

I've had charging system issues that caused my tach to wig-out.

Try looking over the stator pigtail.

It's a place to check.

I had an identical fault with my S4, luckily it was under warrranty, however it was corrosion in one of the connectors and required a new loom.

Tachometer and instrument panel bugs are usually signs of a faulty charging system/battery or, in the case of the speedometer, a bad speedo sensor. However, as StevieH pointed out, water in the electrical connections cause similar issues. I suggest first checking voltage at the battery terminals to see what is happening there. If that looks good, disconnect the instrument panel from the main wiring harness, blow it out with air, apply a little dielectric grease, and connect it back up.
