Starter button sometimes takes 2 pushes?

Recently it seems that I have to push the starter button twice to start my S4. The first push I usually hear a click, kinda like a relay I suppose, then the second push it starts up as normal. Does anyone know why? It never takes more than 2 pushes on the button and it doesn't do it all the time. Probably about 50% of the time. Im suspecting a relay, but want to rule out something more serious. And I don't want to be stranded if its an easy fix.

i have a couple of questions first: how long after you turn the key over do you press the button? is the engine finished priming? how long do you press the button the first time? is the bike hot or cold does it matter?

my d6 does something similar i noticed it only does it when i hit the button as the priming of the gas finishes and no matter how long i hold the button, it never finishes nor does it start. then when its hot it does something similar but if i hold it for like 2 seconds longer it will then begin to start. this happened on 2 d6's also. i don't know if its related but from my experience if you don't give the bike enough time to 'finish' its startup process it just gives you a hard time.

same thing goes for my 2004 mini cooper with gps. if i don't give it say at least 3-5 seconds after turning the key into the on position and just crank it then nothing works in it like the gps, lights, air condition/heater etc etc.
personal experience.

i'm having a similar problem with my 03 tt600. sometimes i just get a click when i thumb the starter. this might happen several times in a row - it's very inconsistent. the starter switch on the handlebar has been my guesstimate but after opening it up, everything looks fine. the length of time between turning the key and thumbing the switch doesn't seem to play a role.

FIXED!

It was the $15 (US) cable that plugs into the clutch perch (at the handlebar) that lets the engine know if/when the clutch has been pulled in. It seems these can get a little corroded over time. Simple fix - unplug the old one and plug in the new one.

Now, if only someone could fix my slight oil leak...
