Daytona 600 rear brakes troubles

I have a 2004 Daytona 600 I just bought with 9000 miles on it. I had only put about 250 miles on it when I discovered my rear brakes pads were worn completely away and I was smearing the rivets from the brake shoes onto my rotor. Anyway, I cleaned up the rotor and replaced the pads. Now the caliper does not close far enough to get the new pads to apply pressure on the rotor. I have bled the brakes, still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can adjust the gap on the rear caliper or what I may be missing?

Thanks, from the new guy.

How did you bleed the brakes?

So when you bled the brakes how did you know the job was complete? The until way to tell is when the pedal is nice and hard (not spongy), but that would only work if the pads were already contacting the rotor. Do you just need to pump the pedal a few times to bring the piston back in contact with the rotor?

I pressed the rear brake, open the bleed valve, closed the vavle then released the brake. I did this about 10-15 times. I could see the piston compress and release, but it never tightened up.

I did finally get this fixed last night. I ended up taking the caliper completely off, pressed the brake a few times to compress the cylinder, and put it all back together. It looks like the bolt towards the front of the bike that holds the caliper on had a little corrosion and was not screwing back in all the way. I cleaned it up and put it all back together. Lo and behold, I now had rear brakes! Yeah!
