Tt 600 16k Mx

Hello everyone,

I've recently decided that I need to learn more about maintaining my 01 TT 600.
It had 12.5K miles when I bought it 2 years ago with no mx records; I'm the third owner.
It's really my first true bike. I had a Honda enduro that I took to a dealship to maintain. I'm becoming more comfortable with doing my own mx, especially with my 05 GTI (105K and out of warrenty). I'm learning quickly that parts are very spendy for Triumphs, but I'm really happy still to own one, and would like to make it run the best it can, for as long as it can. As of right now, I have no intention of ever selling it.

In advance, thank you everyone for all your time, knowledge, and especially patience in fielding similar questions on this forum. It's just that sometimes, as simple as Will and BombFactory as well as others put things, I still am looking for clarification.

New Pilot Powers were put on last summer, with oil changes each spring 07, 08, and now 09. I'm running the PureOne PL14610 with the Shell Rotella Syn. As far as I'm aware, the bike is stock with the exception of smaller aftermarket stalk front signals, and the rear LEDs I installed.

The bike does have the sluggish response @ 3K RPM, which from what I've read can be helped if I bring it to a dealership and have them load a newer (02 or 03) stock map than the current 01. To futher help the situation would be a Powercommander or Tuneboy, leaning towards the TB for the extra functions (MIL/CEL reads alone would pay for itself in the long run). However, that will have to come at a later time due the Mrs and I having our first child seven weeks ago.

The TT also does the stalling thing when decellerating with the clutch held in. This I believe is either oil getting into the IAC or possible leaks in the airbox, or lines to it. I haven't tackled this yet, but is on my to do list this weekend. Predicting rain Friday through Sunday here in Minneapolis.

I rode to work tonight so the fuel level should be much lower when I attempt to take it off for the first time. Thanks for the heads up. I should probably look into some new metal fittings as suggested in another thread I read.

Anyways, I'm getting to the point, what really should be done @ the 16K mile mark. It looks like @ 16K the Triumph Manual shows that I should change the Air Filter, Fuel Filter, check/adjust Valve Clearance, balance the throttle bodies, Lubricate the headstock bearing, renew Fork oil, renew seals on brake master cylinder and calipers, renew brake fluid and lines.

Motoprimo in Lakeville told me that Triumph changed their MX schedules to 6K, 12K, 18 instead of every four. He also said that brake lines and seals should be fine, but the fluid should be flushed.

I think I can handle the filters and fluid change, but I know I would need help with anything else. And in my case I don't really know anybody in MSP so that means I'll pay stealership prices for it. If I can get away with not doing something that I can't figure out how to do through this forum, wonderful; we could use the money. At the same time, I don't want to put myself in jeopardy, or cause harm to the bike because I'm being cheap.

The front brake resevior looks good, the rear is on the low side of ok. I've never taken the tank off yet, but I'm sure the air filter needs replacement. Go with a K&N maybe, just because I know how to clean that, or perhaps just replace with OEM so the map doesn't need to be changed.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm loosing steam, so off to bed for a couple hours before I fly back home.

Cheers everyone.

Mike

i have a daytona 600 and when I put a k&n i had a stock exhaust. I couldn't really tell that it needed any map change at all. That is really only necessary when you change out the exhaust. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I'm pretty happy w/ K&N but a lot of the old guys I ride with are really into BMC air filters. Might wanna research that.
