Firstly some background:
I bought the Super III last Fall and was able to put about 300 miles on it before the cam chain tensioner failed, which resulted in several bent valves and - worst of all - a broken intake camshaft.
With lots of work and help from members of this board, I got her back together and running with a used head and cams off a 97 Tiger, so I guess now you would call her a 95/7 Super Tiger. It was then that I remembered that carburetors are my nemesis, as the jetting under the new configuration was way off. By this point I had been at it for a couple months and probably another $1500 over what I paid for her originally and, sad to say, I just ran out of energy and she never got finished.
So, seeing how badly it makes me feel every time I see her sitting in the corner of the garage, I need to find her a home - hopefully with someone who'll finish the job and get her on the road again - or, barring that, she'll get parted out to help others with their bikes.
The details:
Along with the head transplant, which included a new head gasket, valve cover gasket, new cam chain and tensioner (obviously) - I was also going through regular tune up practices of fresh oil, coolant, brake fluid flush, spark plugs, etc (mind you this was almost a year ago now, so plan on changing the fluids anyway).
I still have the original busted head with the good exhaust camshaft and that would go with the bike, so you would have the ability of rebuilding her to original spec if you can source an intake cam (I had some leads from rat members of being able to get them at dealers in England).
Also, I have a brand new in the bag petcock for the fuel tank and the shop manual (Clymer, I think) as well as many various bits and pieces including an assortment of valve shims.
Also - the fuel lines. I tried to make this work with generic fuel hose and inline filters, but ran into occasional fuel flow problems, so I'd say it would be a good idea to buy the OEM hoses with the filters that fit inside the carb hookups just to be sure.
Oh and she's got the Sebring exhaust.
Cosmetically she's in good shape. The lower cowl has some wear and tear from road debris on the black part, but otherwise the body panels are in good shape for the age. She's got 21K and change on the clock. Title is free and clear.
Summary:
This would be a good buy for a home mechanic who understand carburetor tuning and is equipped to do so. I'd say a couple of weekends of tuning, with appropriate jet sizes on hand, maybe a carb rebuild and some general cleanup and maintenance and you can have her back on the road in her current configuration. Or for a winter project and a little more money invested you can get yourself a full on Super III.
If you don't have the mechanical skills to tune up the carburetors or rebuild the original head, then don't go for it because the money you'll pay a shop to do it will bring the price above what you will pay for a running one (if you can find one).
So there's my story. Hopefully someone will give her a good home and put her back in service. We're located in Rockville, MD and the first offer over $1,000 to haul her away will take her.
I'm posting this here to give any members interested first dibs, since many of you were very kind and helpful to me in trying to work this out. If I don't get any nibbles I'll put a similar ad on local craigslist for the bike as a whole and then by then end of next week I'll likely start that parting out process on ebay (I'll post links to the auction here as I'm sure the juicier bits - CF, brakes, etc - will be in high demand).
Please PM or post with any questions. I'd really prefer not to deal with shipping, etc, but will consider it for the right offer/person.
Some pics attached. Right now she's partially disassembled, but I'll put her together again before anyone comes to pick her up.
