Some every thought provoking ideas here.
I'll offer some more.
1) diesel diesel 110 mpg is very attractive ( be the first )
2) A scooter 400cc or greater hit the Italians where it hurts
3) ALL motorcycles shaft or belt drive & heated grips
4) Touring models electric windscreen & ABS
5) Triumph do not discontinue triple cruisers ( ARE U CRAZY )

A triple based upon the current Thruxton engine. Hmmm that would 1297.5cc's.
Similar engineering feat was performed to create the original Trident engine.
With today's engineering methods it could be made better.

1. A proper replacement for the Trophy, with shaft drive.
2. Detachable hard bags for the Bonneville, that look period correct, yet can hold a goodly ammount of stuff, are really waterproof, and when detached don't leave behind an ugly framework.
3. A "sport touring" version of the Rocket III, that does not look like an American cruiser. Or better yet, downsize the Rocket III driveline and create a new Trophy from it.
4. Dual front disc brakes for the Thruxton.
A six speed gearbox for the Bonneville with 6th taller than the current 5th.

1. Engine management
A. Add a Knock sensor
Run this in closed loop mode with individual cylinder timing adjustments..
This will allow for more aggressive (powerfull) ignition advance yet still be able to not only survive a low octane encounter but deal with it well.
For now I will add a J&S safeguard.
B. Add closed loop wide band O2 sensor.
Run the ECU and wideband o2 in closed loop... This has alot to add to the bike if utilized right.. It can with a smart ECU tune the air fuel mixture exactly for the fuel in the bike in real time and not just at idle and low throttle. It can get WOT tune spot on.. It can also be used to privide a lean burn mode at cruising throttle settings. This will stretch the MPG a bit higher..
With the new 20% ethanol laws in some places, other markets 10%, other people running non oxygenated race gas... there is a good degree of fuel variance.. This will adress that.. It can also adjust for things such as slip ons and air filter/box modifications automatically. Another option is E85 fuel.. 85% ethanol.. OEM car MFGs are now to using a wideband o2 sensor alone and not using the in the fuel line sensor they once used for dual or FFV cars.. The wideband system works better.. It would probably just need bigger injectors and some minor changes (coatings) to the fuel systems metal parts..
These components are not expensive anymore and becomming very common place on 4 wheeled machines.
Part II.. More advanced changes.
1. Headlight upgrade.. Consider bixenon HID projectors. However this idea will work with a halogen projector..
A. Mount the cut off sheild on a gimbal, mount a micro gyro (like RC helis use) to it and connect it to a high speed servo. This way where the sheild cuts off the upper part of the beam (makes it a low beam) will always counter act the lean angle.
There are other things that can be done too. Independant of tilt angle cutoff plate height movement could be used with another gyro and servo. I would program it for short term
corrections. This way it will cancel out the effect of a bump or dip but not move the cut off downwards on a uphill or upwards on a down hill.
Steering headlights are also cool but compared to just the lean angle compensation one sensor + a servo is easier and cheaper to do when moving the really light cut off plate in the projector than moving a entire assembly.
B. Add a paralever to the front suspension.. BMW has a patent on their "telelever".. A paralever is just the control arm but retaining springs and dampers in the forks.. BMW was'nt the first to put a control arm up front. The only thing I like about the BMWs these days is the anti dive this system provides on braking..

Read this list from the top -- note that it was started ~4 yrs ago. Look at how much of the stuff we've asked for is here now.
Okay, Triumph, you are listening somewhat. Now, let's go to work on a two-up touring sport bike, to compete with the BMW K1200GT, the Yamaha FJR1300 (but not the AE), the Honda ST1300, and the forth-coming Kawasaki 1400cc Concours!

Reading this topic was like time travelling through triumph design headquarters. And it's the reason whyI am choosing triumph this time around. So far - it is one of the FEW companies that actually seem to listen to their consumers. Another one that comes on my list is canon But anyways - just read the thread again. It's refreshing to see the new direction our lovely triumphs are heading.

As head of development....??? yes, yes,,, a 1200cc air cooled cruiser...i.e. Trident and making the speedmaster/America a 1000cc twin, air cooled of course.....but mostly two things...an intro bike i.e. the Cub of 250cc and a new "Trophy" maybe a rocket with Trophy-esq fairing and bags or just a Trophy with the 1050cc engine...I would quickly buy this....My old Trophy is long in the tooth and I hate to give it up because............They may not sell alot of them but there would be a market for a new Trophy !

I'd talk to the Thunderstar 1200's designers about importing their 3 cylinder, turbo diesel into the line-up. Can you imagine a Sprint producing 200 foot lbs of torque, and getting as much as 150mpg, with 100 horses. That's the superclass of sport-touring. Sure it's a turbo diesel, but can you see/smell the idea if running biodiesel. Flying french fries!!
