Re your oil leak, definitely get yourself a Haynes manual and go to town changing oil, o-rings & filter. From one mechanical incompetent to another, I can tell you...it's dead easy. It'll save you save you some dough and you will bond with your machine doing basic stuff. Re your dealer, 3 weeks is a loooong time...I agree. The hell with 'em. There's always someone who will help...just give it some thought and look around. Me, I do all my basic stuff and when it gets over my head, a local Triumph ridin' BMW tech is our go-to guy. Our own VR6 on here has held my hand more than a few times. I buy tires, chains etc... from the local Kaw-Suz-Yam megadealer and they'll put that stuff on. These Triumphs aren't that specialized. A lot of little things interchange. I've been riding these things for 5 years and have never had one thing done by an actual Triumph dealer. We don't have one and the closest (2 hours) were a bunk of jerkoffs I wouldn't trust anyway. Triumph forever!

Thanks for that. You can PM me his address, if you ever get back to read this. Although 4000klms is probably a bit far to come for a service. I'd be just about due for another one by the time I got back home. But I am hoping to get a tour of Tassie in early next year (Feb-Mch) & I'd definitely like to give him a fettle of the old Scrambler, on my way through.
BTW The Triumph man at my dealership is very knowledgable about Hinkley twins, & his standard of workmanship has been excellent throughout my bike's 28,000klms. My beef is with how long it takes me to get to see him. & that his schedule is too tight for him to give each individual bike the attention, they both need & deserve.
& I'd like to stress again, that this is definitely not his fault. In fact I get the impression that he's as distressed about the situation as his customers are. It's the guy signing the cheques who needs to get his act together IMHO.

OS,

I'm w/ you on this one. If three weeks out is the best the dealer can do for ANY service that equals only one thing in my book - poor service. And excuses are just that.

Best,

The only reason I took my Sprint to the dealer for service was the 2 year warranty thing. My warranty runs out in May 08. I've had too many problems with the bike and the dealer attitude towards it, so I cut him out of the picture last year in june and started to do my own work.
Now the bike runs and handles perfectly. I probably would've bought my own replacement rotors if I knew how much of a headache it was just to have the dealer determine if a warranty replacement was within his skill level. After all, I spent $350 when he told me "all they need is a sandblasting" after the bike sat in his lot outside everyday for 3 weeks.

Word of mouth travels fast

I'm with you guys 100%. But, my dealer was great. They promised the bike ten days from ordering, and it was delivered (I stood on some hands and made them stay late) on day 10. The service department though...in the off season, it is 2 weeks. During the peak season it can be up to SIX WEEKS! The difference is that when i had a problem with my neck bearings wobbling, the fit it right in a fixed it that day. Then when my rear brakes went bad 4000 miles, they changed that minute. They charged me 30 bucks. It was worth the money. It seems ridiculous to me that your dealer wouldnt fit you in to tighten a filter. it would have taken five minutes. And, word of mouth travels three times as fast when the word is "bad service".

Oil filters are cheap. They come with a new seal when you buy one. It is no harder to swap an oil filter than it is to unscrew the lid off a mayonaise jar.

The way I reckon it, life is too short to get worked up over minor stuff. I'd buy a new filter and screw it on myself. Tighten it good and hand tight and enjoy the next three weeks riding and not worrying about it.

First off an oil leak that looks minor can be major if a drop gets on to you're back tyre. Second off I had an oil leak that i thought was from the filter ( i have a speedy 07) turns out the actual leak was from the front sprocket seal, hard to tell unless you take of the sprocket cover and give it a very good clean.

Might be worth checking where the oil leak is coming from so you don't have to book it in again
