Lotus/Triumph No-Cam?

In keeping with my "Wish List" theme from earlier, UK's BIKE magazine has an intersting article in their November '07 issue "What Has Exotica Ever Done For Us?" It shows an interesting development of many types of bikes from the past. On page 97, they had a blub on 5 bikes they wish would be built. One wish was a Lotus/Triumph No-Cam. Since I can not find the link, let me drop in the brief comment made; "Three-cylinder missle with elecronic inlet/exhaust valve control instead of a throttle. Infinitely variable valve timing and lift makes other engines redundant overnight." While I'm sure this type of technology would be extremely expensive to mass produce, what are your comments or knowledge of this type of stuff?

Here's a breif article on camless engines

http://paultan.org/archives/2005/07/...valve-engines/

Apparently MB has or is going to go into production of a camless engine. I recall hearing about their use in race cars. An advantage is you can eliminate most of the valve train and its power robbing characteristics and costs. Computers control everything on engines now so why not the valves. Imagine the tuning fun you can have

My inner luddite says the new fangled plastic electronic solenoid doomathicky which is cheap to manufacture will be obscenely expensive, impossible to get, fail often and ultimately not live up to the hype. Tuning and adjustments will require a custom, dealer only computer with a specialized interface.
Neat idea though.

Sounds like you got a sneak peek at their business plan.

Yeah, the way things are going, we'll be lucky to hang on to internal combustion. Thanks for the articl. Hey, you never know. If it burns clean it may happen.
