I live in California. I am interested in bidding on a out of state bike , but I am hesitant because of California's DMV regulations. Does anyone know if its a hassle to bring a new out of state bike into Ca. and register it. Thanks for the imput.

I'm not familiar with California laws, but there is a growing trend toward rules that help control the sale of stolen vehicles. Arkansas was an early adopter, requiring Police verification of my Daytona's VIN before it could be registered. I bought it from an individual in Iowa.

Call your local DMV office and ask what is required to license a motorcycle with an out-of-state title.

For me, it was worth the effort, 95 Daytona900's are rare machines :-D

in mass no title from previous owner means part it out unless you get a notorised bill of sale , but i personely only bid on new leftover bikes to be shure, from dealers that have certificate of origin :???:

Hi kenmat - In '89 I lived in California, and bought BMW R100GC Paris-Dakar from a dealer in Ohio. Before I did so, I called the DMV and asked them wat was required. The person on the other end of the phone told me with a motorcycle it would be no problem, just bring it in and they would register it. The dealer in Ohio told me they sold many 49 state bikes to people in CA, so I went ahead and made the deal. Then the DMV refused to register it since it didn't have a CARB sticker on it. They wouldn't listen to the argument that they told me it would be OK - all they wanted was the name of the person who told me that so they could discipline him. Bottom line - go to the DMV with the specific model of the bike, ask them what to do, and GET IT IN WRITING!!!!!

Good luck, but I wouldn't do it again.

Yes, its a hassle. The laws are designed to discourage CA residents from buying new vehicles out of state and thereby bypassing state emission requirements. DMV Link
If anyone tells you otherwise, as Mark suggested, make sure they show you in writing.

The restrictions don't apply to out of state folks moving into CA with new vehicles, or to anyone bringing used vehicles into CA.

I seem to remember CA having a minimum odometer reading on a 49 state bike before it could be registered. 7,500 miles? If this is right, I promise to help you out. Just send it to me and I'll have it ready in a few months. I'll do anything to help out a fellow rider and Triumph lover.

I know the answer to this. I brought a Laverda in from Georgia and have friends at DMV. You cannot bring in a new bike from outside the state unless you can prove a residence in that state and are moving. The bike must have California emissions and labeled for it. You can however bring in a previously titled bike from any state without mileage limitations. The trick is to get the dealer to title it to a person and sell the bike to you. When you take previous title to DMV they wiil inspect for emissions label only and register it for you. You are liable for sales tax and DMV fees.....................John
