Back then Triumph Motorcycles were built extremely well, but had their respective issues.
However, when you're competing with models that won't ever see 20k miles in their lifetime or retain the majority of their original parts - it doesn't seem to make much sense.
In the late 90's, it was all Triumph could do to compete with the lower prices and better financing rates offerred by just about anyone. It was amazing, someone with marginal credit couldn't buy a $9500 Triumph, but they could roll off on a Harley or BMW costing twice as much - or just spend the same money at the Honda shop.
My brother's 04 FZ1 had some significant engine trouble in late 2005, blew it's head gasket and some other major component. When he got it back I learned that he had purchased a service plan with the bike, and how it has more than paid for itself - twice.
If I were in his position, I wouldn't have made the same decision at the time of purchase - but now see how that the right kind of offer can make a positive difference. Especially if you do a lot of miles on your bike.
