There is a thread on the Triumph Valmoto website that Triumph is developing a 600cc triple, starting as a racing bike and then detuning it to be a street bike instead of starting with a street bike and turning it into a race bike. This could be pie in the sky, or it could be a real skunk works project. The rumor also says that in theory they can get at least as much power out of a triple as a four, and it will be thinner and lighter.

Anybody else hear any rumors about this from anywhere else? It would be completely different, that is for sure. I sure hope it is real.

It seems that if Triumph could get that much power out of a 600 triple then Ducati should be able to get it out of a 750 twin (which they can't).
Now, it may be possible they can run a 675cc triple in the Supersport class and can get the power out of that, but what do I know... :???:

Well a triple has a couple of advantages over both twins and fours. It has better primary balance, is narrower than a four and shorter than a V-twin. So if Triumph does this (man I hope they do!!) they will have the advantage of greater flexibility when it comes to engineering the chassis for better handling. That's why Aprliia went with the cube in GP. Even though Aprilia didn't quite get the results they were looking for, I don't think it was down to the engine layout but was due to other complications. Hinckley OTOH has a great engineering department as is evident in the current triples and the competitive D600 four. So maybe they can pull it off. Wouldn't it be cool if they did!
