HELP! This thread's been unstrung, snapped, hijacked!
 A good discussion, though... kk
I've just reviewed the Triumph Member's Handbook, and after noting the requirements and restrictions placed on the organization and operation of Packs. I'm wondering what benefits Triumph offers in return for this control? Triumph itself appears to make no commitments, other than making room in Torque for a Pack announcement. The Handbook also doesn't place stipulations on shop support for the pack.
IOW--What is the incentive to organize a RAT Pack through Triumph rather than just organizing one not associated with them? The pressure seems to be placed on riders and shops, not on the corporation. What happened to British socialism (don't answer that!!!).
I'm still thinking a bit about the post on Triumphrat.net about the Portland pack, TRAP.

That is a question I've often asked myself. There is no RAT pack around San Antonio. I did join RAT last year, but the only "benefit" I could have got out of it, the Waco, TX RAT Raid, I didn't get to make.
Other than that, there's not much of a reason to pay $35 to join RAT.

Lots of benefits for the $30.00 to join RAT.... if you are the kind of rider that takes advantage of it. Here are a few of the benefits for RAT North America:
- 4 Issues of Torque
- 8 Issues of the North American Newletter
- Attendance at about 12 RAT Raid events this year to fantastic destinations including Daytona, Deals Gap, British Columbia, Steamboat Springs, etc.
- Dealer discounts (where the dealer is active and smart)
- Great fellowship with some of the most skilled, knowledgeable and fun Triumph riders in the nation.
- Free Triumph stuff (shirts, backpacks, hats, banners, etc.)
- More free Triumph stuff (technical tips, rider proficiency, food, beer...)
Now, If you put less than 1k on your clock last year and sit on your duff the rest of the time watching the Speed channel - maybe this ain't for you. My advice is for you to NOT join RAT and stay home - that will mean more free stuff for me and the other fun folks!! :-)

Here are the benefits I received.
- 4 issues of Torque
- 0 issues of North American Newsletter
- News of RAT events, all but one are a good two
days of riding just to get there. Not that I mind
two days of riding, but I have a job and a family.
- Dealer dropped Triumph in San Antonio which is
good, as they sucked as a Triumph dealer.
- I do have good fellowship with other riders, only
two other Triumph riders though.
- Free Stuff.. I did received the patch and stickers-
I'm in agreement with others, the 2002 patch was
much nicer.
- Did pick up some neat ideas from Torque
RAT is not a bad idea, I just wish it was a little more spread out and Packs did not have to be associated
with a dealer. I live around some of the best riding roads in Texas. A perfect place for a RAT Pack..

tbsrider2000...I have received the same benefits as you. What is the North American Newsletter? I haven't received that before.
My RAT membership runs out May. I do not plan on renewing as my dealer just gives me a discount..he could careless if I was with RAT or not.

It's hard to pitch being a RAT member to people who are somewhat isolated from areas that have a lot of other Triumph riders or dealers. It's easier for me where my pack is in NY and there's a bunch of Triumph guys around and we can get to some events easier. You might speak to RAT about starting a pack that is not affiliated with a dealer if there isn't one around? Let me know if I can help, being a pack leader myself I might have some pull

Tom:
1. There are at least 3 RAT events that are within a days ride of you - New England Raid, Allegheny Raid, Dragon Raid.
2. There is a pack in your area. If you were hanging with them, you would be getting the newsletter, as it goes out to the Pack leaders for distribution.
3. If you want the free stuff, you have to go to a Raid. I have gotten something nice given to me at almost every event. The pack gives stuff away too.
4. If your dealer is doesn't care about a RAT pack, they need to learn a few things about marketing!

1. Why don't you talk to Callahan about forming a pack? A few excpetions have been made.
2. You have two events this year within a days ride - Texas Raid and Hot Springs Raid. Panhandle Raid in May might be a distant third?
3. FREE STUFF IS TO BE HAD AT RAIDS AND PACK MEETINGS ! (I suggest you get to one or the other).
