I've had my 94 tiger for 5,000km now. I replaced the throttle cable soon after buying the bike (at 96,000km) because it was munted where it passes the steering head. On the next ride I noticed the throttle was sticky after riding on a dusty road. After giving it a good caning it came right. About 1000Km later another dusty raod and sticky throttle again. No amount of hard riding made it come right - it was 130Km of dusty road. This is when I decided there may be a corelation between dust and sticky throttle. It only sticks at the beginning of the twist. Also it doesn't shut off either, which makes for big eyes as corners come up fsater than planned. I had a 100,000Km service at the local Triumph dealer who cleaned the air filter (K&N), cleaned the carbs and all the other 100k stuff. It was fine after this but today after going through just 150 meters of dusty bloody roadworks it got sticky again. Just at the beginning of the throttle throw is a noticable stick - the rest of the twist is fine. Slowing from well open throttle is no problem but if I tootle along at, say, 60km, 3500rpm with no load and let the throttle go it decelerates decidedly slowly.
This is making my swears come out. Please help. topher01@xtra.co.nz

Is there enough slack in the cable. Also is it well lubed.

Before checking anything to complicated have a look at the bar end and see if the grip, particularly if you have heated grips, is rubbing against it, if so put in a washer to give a bit of clearance. It solved my problem and I've heard of other people with this same thing happening!

Yep, has heated grips. So, was yours rubbing on the bat weight? With mine if I thumb the choke on and off, the stickiness goes away until next deceleration.

Just had a look and no rubbing at all with throttle grip. With engine off, it's still not nice and smooth - there's gritty, uneven resistance. How can such a little bit of dust make such a big difference? :hammer:

topher01,
Is the throttle cable seated properly within the housing on the bar, and is the choke going off fully.
It sounds as though the grit is causing problems but it might be because something else isn't quite right.

Yeah, chokes going off fine. I'll check the cable fitting in case that's the prob. Are there any known issues with the carbs and dust? Perhaps wear somewhere allowing dust to be sucked in or where dust gets past the filter and causes sticky slides? Getting the carbs off doesn't look too daunting, except that the bike appears to have been assembled around the aircleaner as the starting point. The throttle cable attachment seems to require a mechanic with an extraordianry hand deformity to reach it too. Are there any tricks/workarounds or is it just patience and cursing?
