Odd behavior

I recently had a new front tyre fitted, and now it feels very different.
I had a like for like metzeler front tyre replaced, and my previously
fine handling bike has changed. Now when turning left the bars feel very heavy, and I can feel resistance from the wheel. It feels very much like turning a kids gyroscope.Turning right has no discernable problems,it feels very normal,as before fitting the tyre. The tyre was fitted at a tyre centre that I have used for several years, and they appear to have fitted both the tyre and wheel correctly.I did think it may have been me,but the right turn, being OK makes me think otherwise. The obvious course of action is to go back to the tyre centre, but they work the same hours as I do.So if anyone has any ideas
as to what may be my problem please let me know.

Sounds pretty strange, all right. First thing I would check is to make sure there aren't any cables, wires, or hoses up near the top of the forks that are getting snagged on something. While in the shop a cable could have been pushed into the wrong place and got hooked.

Good luck.

An obvious one is check the pressure. some car tyre centres don't know what pressures to put in a bike tyre.

If you've got a "big trailie" tyre on, they aren't perfectly round, they are lots of little squares - if you know what I mean Once it wears in a bit, and you turn the edges off the squares it'll be ok.

Did that make any sense I know what I want to say but can't explain it properly

Anyway, mines the same when I get a new Anakee on the front. I wouldn't worry.

Thank you chaps,I haven't checked cable snags,or for that matter tyre pressures.I do sort of get what you mean Graeme, about the shoulder of the tyre.I think your referring to the new square corners, that need to wear slightly.I will go away and check tonight and see if anything is amiss.

Are they Tourances you're wearing? I had Tourances on my GS's many times over the years - and often found that a new front would give odd behaviour until it starts to wear in. On the GS, sometimes a new front would give a very slight 'preference' in one direction or t'other, whilst other's would be spot on. If I did get a Tourance with 'character', it would always lose it's strangeness after a k or so miles.

After much exploration, wheel balancing, pressure-checking, taking back to the shop and general head-scratching, I learned to live with the 'character' of a new Tourance - and put it down to the behaviour of an ( actually pretty good ) road tyre that thinks it can do off-road, but actually can't really, but still displays some minor characteristics of an off-road tyre on-road. If that makes any sense at all!

I have had the same issues on some of my new front tires, but only some and yet I use the same brand and make of tire every time. One thing to check is that it is balanced correctly. One of my fitting was done incorrectly and all the bike wanted to do was turn right, I could actually feel the bars pulling that direction. But other times it is the characteristic of the tire has been at fault.

This is not as unusual as it seems. I had this with the Battlewings when they were fitted. I would point to two possible causes:

1) Has the wheel been balanced properly when the new tyre was fitted ?

2) Try dropping the rear tyre pressure by 2 psi - I found that by running at 36 psi front and
40 psi rear makes a difference

Cheers,

Thanks for all the advice.First can I say the tyre is a tourance, and it was fitted by a motorcycle tyre centre. The tyre pressure is fine and the balance weights are firmly fixed. The old weights have been removed,so can only assume balance is OK.I have now done a few more miles and the left turns are starting to feel more normal.I will try the rear tyre pressure and carry on putting on miles.

Daft question - is it on the right way round ??

Check the arrows.

I had car tyres fitted the wrong way round, or the wheels put on the wrong sides, but boy did it handle funny.
