tiger 885 ceased fairing screws

several year ago my kind dealer tuned my tiger 885, claiming to have an ex triumph mechanic in the workshop. He also kindly tightened the fairing screws ( which have shoulders) so tight that now the capitaved nuts in the plastic tank just rotate and I now cannot get the fairing or the tank off. I can only do this by removing them both together ( and by taking off the bars etc).

Does anyone know how to release these scres without damaging the fairing too much (ie by just ripping the screws through?)

My triumph desperately needs a tune and a service and taking the tank and fairing off together is a right pain in the a**.

Not certain about Tiger (thought it's a nice bike), if this were my s3, I'd say those fairing to tank fasteners were stripped (just turning with no grip). If that's the case, gently wiggle out then re-tap with SAE thread (which is a touch bigger, but not as big as next size up on metric thread). Check if stripped first though... Another option might be to fill screwholes with epoxy then tap to exact metric size. Hope this helps!

Just an afterthought, if those screws meet locknuts on other side of transaction, grip behind with pliers or? to remove, then replace...

Girlie or Steamer, and which screws exactly? In rebuilding Maggie, I changed lots of fasteners which were somewhat poorly designed. I also had to take some things apart, destructively!

this is stated on the yahoo site

"Turning fairing screw. Drill the head off, get the fairing off, wedge

the bush in place and remove the remains of the screw, wedge the bush

in place more firmly by drilling a very small hole that notches the

lip of the bush and screwing a teeny tiny self-tapper in there. To

point out the blindingly obvious: there's petrol at the other end of

that drill bit, so take care"

From what I can tell, all Tiger fairings are the same. Just checked mine(twice) and the bolt that goes through the tank is screwed into the rear of the black indicator mounting panel.
You should be able to remove the fairing by dropping out the two screws that hold the panels on, leaving the tank ones in place. If that doesnt work then you have to cut the head off the tank screws as there is no room to get a drill in.

PeteH-
That's the way it is on yours and mine. If it's a Steamer, I have no idea how it's put together. If a picture or diagram could be shown, then we know what's being talked about. I think all the answers are good, it's just that they might be for the wrong screws on the wrong bike! BikeBandit has pictures of alll the Tiger parts fiche. Maybe kirky could start there.

Bill, He says its an 885, so its one like ours I checked Bikebandit before posting the first reply and all the Girly Tigers look to use the same fairing.

the bolt housing(bushing) is located in the tank. it is all to common for these to become loose, causing them to spin. this concerns the 885 carb model(93-98).

While I don't know exactly what it looks like, if it's a threaded bushing imbedded in the tank, you might try superglue in the tank/bushing joint. There are some of those inserts on the sides of the Girlies tanks, and I have used superglue to secure them. Just don't superglue the bolt into the bushing!
When the 885 went to injection, the Girly was born. Steamers are 885s with carbs. 955s are just more manly Girlies! 1050s aren't "real" Tigers!
