03 Cutting Out

Hi all,

Quick query regarding some random cutting out on my 03 955i. I've never had this kind of problem with it before, but every so often I'll be riding when all of a sudden I completely lose all drive for about a second whilst the MIL and the Low Fuel lamp both light together. About a second after I regain drive, the two lamps extinguish again.

I'm suspecting it's a dodgy electrical connection somewhere because a couple of times it has happened whilst riding over a big bump, but I'm not quite sure where to start looking!

I was wondering if anybody else had experienced this before? My first suspicion was the sidestand cutout switch, but when I experimented this simply cuts the ignition without displaying any lamps which seems to eliminate it.

Any help much appreciated

Cheers,
Tim.

sounds like a loose connection.

have you done anything recently?

start with the battery and the connectors under the seat

in 03 there was a recall on the ignition switch wireing so have a look around that area, the bolts can work loose.

mine is an 03 and the side stand switch has been playing up but not as you say

Hi Robbie, thanks for your swift reply.

I've not made any changes recently. In fact, it's the first year in a long time that I've barely ridden through the winter months. Hope I'm not becoming "fair weather" <gasp> ;-)

My only (and probably quite significant) crime was putting the bike away wet on several occasions and letting it fester (I paid the price by having to completely strip and overhaul the brakes as punisment!). I imagine this is unlikely to have done any exposed electrical connections much good either.

I'll give it a good going over tonight and disconnect/reconnect/tighten as many things as possible, with lashings of WD40 and see how it performs over the weekend

Thanks again,
Tim.

Thanks again, Robbie - 100% correct!

Never been caught out by loose battery terminals before because the bike doesn't normally stay in one piece for long enough for them to work loose

But sure enough, the negative terminal was loose.
Have duly tightened and all is back to normal!

Cheers,
T.

So's mine and so's mine - and last night in particular when I was in a hurry to meet some chums for a ride. The switch plunger wasn't popping out at all when the stand was up! Lashings of WD40 inside the rubber boot and working it in and out sorted it.

Jeee glad to help

the tiger for some reason likes to loose the battery.
I havent had a problem but they never seam to be tight when removing the battery.
I thought it was all the extra ring terminals on mine (from all the gadgets) but I know several people that have been caught out.

it may be somthing to do with the plastic box allowing the battery to move slightly. always the negative side to!

Hi,I have just had the same on my 2001 speed triple.
Mine wasn't completely loose, but I could easily twist the positive lead round with my hand.
The battery really should be bolted down solid, rather than floating under a plastic bracket,I think!

I had the same problem with my 2004 tiger, but it wasn't a loose connection, it was the battery moving in the casing and the negative or positive connector touching the frame. I bit of cardboard wedged down the back of the battery sorted that problem.
