Can anyone help me? :???:

My 05 Tiger has started with an annoying rattle from the engine, I think the gearbox area. It appears to be worse when the bike is coasting, when the power is on the noise goes. I don't think it's the clutch as the noise is still there when engaged or not. The noise is still there when revved standing still but not as bad as when I am moving.

Any suggestions?

I am unable to take the bike to my local dealer as they were drowned out during the recent floods in Carlisle.
I think my nearest dealer will be Newcastle for a while which would be a 200 mile round trip.
Not that I wouldn't enjoy the run out.

Thanks

Ian

That don't sound good at all

Definately a trip to Newcastle me thinks??

Could be a number of things, with the gearbox at the top of the list. The bike is under warranty so don't risk it, get it booked in pronto just in case.

The bike is in warrantee so get it to a dealer, but I would want to know if it was something stupid like a lose bracket on the frame or something dangerous that might kill me on the way to the dealers.
This is what I would do.
Think back to when you first noticed the rattle, did you do anything to the bike just before? Take the tool kit out and put some extra spanners in? Fitted a tank bag? Ran over a rock? Mounted a pavement? That sort of thing, it just might help you look in the right place.
Put the bike on the centre stand.
Actually you may want to check the centre stand bolts and brackets first, some have been known to come loose.
Tug at things that look like they might cause the sort of noise you are hearing like heat shield on can, bash plate on exhaust, exhaust clamp, pannier frame
Start it and look for anything moving, touch stuff that is not going to be hot and see if the noise stops.
Check the gearbox by putting the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in, slip the clutch against the back brake, any change in the noise?
If you have a quite road with a down hill section try costing with engine off in and out of gear.

Other tips I can think of are:
Use a long screwdriver (or metal rod) placed against the engine in various places and then to your ear to listen to what is going on inside. (May look stupid when you do this so check that there is nobody about) use a cardboard tube from kitchen roll against your ear to help locate the area of the noise.

Dealer in Carlise back open so took the bike for them to have a listen and guess what??

No rattle!!!!!

They had a good check of the bike while I was there as they thought it may have been down to engine management system. Put diagnostic box on and everything checked out OK.

Told me to just go back if it comes back. They also said it could be backlash in the gears which is a problem with this engine.

Even though no fault found still enjoyed the run out.
Bike was covered in salt by the time I got home.

Thanks

Good news! I'm glad your engine is OK.

However, at low revs and idling, the ol' Tiger is, shall we say, agricultural ... ... it's when it's wound up that the beast is released and the real roar can be heard!
