similar overheating problem

Recently my 06 tiger has been having some cooling issues.

I first noticed the smell of steaming coolant while idling at stoplights and that my fan wasn't coming on. However, the temperature gauge never went past half way. This went on for a few days and this weekend I decided to just let it idle to make sure that my fan hadn't gone bad. It idled fine for several minutes with the temp gauge well below half way until suddenly smoke started to plume out of the dash and then the fan came on.

After reading all the other posts on this issue, what is throwing me is that the temp gauge never showed overheating. Does this mean I have a bad sensor, or do I just need to check the levels and replace the rad cap.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

hmmm

Yout will have to find out where it leaks. It might be radiator cap, loose hose, anthing including temp sensor or even thermostat.

If you've been low on coolant, the temperature sensor may not have been seeing the correct temperature as it would only be intermittently submerged. Your bike should be too new to have the crossed over pipes to the expansion tank but worth a check.

You'll need to take the tank off anyway to check things out, including the real coolant level.

for the posts

Took the cockpit and talk off and found that the elbow connector on the return hose was broken and coolant was leaking from there. Radiator was also low. New parts on order. Will do a coolant flush and refill and hopefully that will fix it.
